Master Bedroom needs a refresh. Please help!

Our master bedroom is dated and in need of an update. We’re building a new home and will be moving in about nine months, so I want to focus on changes that’ll move with us.

I’m happy with the layout, paint colors, ceiling fan, and furniture in place. Not so happy with the blinds, but probably won’t be swapping them out at this point.

I’m looking for advice/opinions on linens, wall decor, lamps, maybe an area rug, and
possibly a bench (not sure whether there’s enough space).

My design style has been described as Northwest contemporary. I’ve gotten started on the linens but momentum has slowed as more and more decisions need to be made :)

Here’s a pic of the room from the doorway.

I also have 3x5" rugs on either side of my bed. It works well for us too.

Thanks! I've been working on changing it from a medium blue color with greens to something lighter and brighter. That's exactly how I've placed the rug.

Thanks for the reassurance, Gcubed! Our rugs are scheduled for delivery on 7/31.

Speaking of rugs...here’s the bedroom rug and the bathroom shower curtain together. Oh my! HIWE, where did you find this shower curtain?

I love the little golden tone baskets..the size is really good two on each shelf....any chance you would paint the frames if those mirrors?

I am not sure grey baskets will look right.🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly. I thought about the caramel colored baskets but I thought it would just highlight the caramel colored cabinets. I think gray goes well w slate blue which is basically gray lol. And I’m surprised you like the stripe shower curtain Sofia! I love it but you just seemed to know you would prefer florals lol. Nice curtain hiwe very pretty!

I checked out the banded shower curtain and the dimensions are 72” x 74”. We need 54” x 78”, which really limits available options.
Mirror frames are brushed nickel. Painting them? Not in the cards at this stage.

My next thought is to have a shower curtain made. Maybe this fabric (lower left)?

    Found this on Etsy....

Great find HIWE! I’ve messaged the Etsy shop about making the shower curtain.
Also, I found a couple more basket options. The first one is similar to the one you found only the color is a little lighter. The second one brings a little fun and sparkle but may not work quite as well :)

Do they fit on the shelf? The ones I found you could Do 2 per shelf..the only thing is once you add baskets you are loosing some of the depth on the shelf...so keep that in mind..you may need to buy a few different options and try them out...any chance you could create some stacked storage under the sink for most of those items..use the shelves for washcloths..pretty containers with Qtips..cotton balls..

I’m thinking of doing a mix. Say on one shelf, a basket with lotions plus a jar with cotton rounds, for example. These baskets will take up about 2/3 of the shelf width. There’s also a lighter color version of the first one...

Heard back from the Etsy shop about the fabric: We sincerely apologize- the fabric is not available at this time. We are awaiting word from the manufacturer if they will be printing more or not.
We’re back to square one on the shower curtain...

What type of rod and rings do you have? Can the rod be moved or is it attached to wall? You could just but a lined drapery panel and hang it with clip rings.

Hi HIWE, thanks so much for searching for fabrics with me. I like the Bluebell Damask sample but found this pic online and the fabric is more tan than blue. There’s already so much of that caramel-y color in a relatively small room (floor, vanity, linen cabinet, door, trim). I need to be really careful about adding any more.

So went back to looking at fabrics again. What do we think of this one?

Have you gotten Any of your new items for bedroom?

Just the lamp so far. Waiting patiently (not!).

New linens are here. White pillowcases, check! The shams look to be a warm gray though and I’m not loving how they look with the bedcover. I think we can do better, so back they go.

  • PRO

Oh darn...they where not matching that went with bedcover? Grey is hard to match...

Grey is hard to match! I think I’ll be happy for them to just play nicely together :) These two just aren’t happy together.
This has been kind of frustrating and time-consuming for me, but I’m learning. One of the things I’ve learned is not to settle. Before, I would settle for slightly mismatched greys, slightly too tall lamps, slightly too little light, etc. And before you knew it my whole room would look slightly off.... Thank you Julie for pushing me to stick with it and not settle!

@Sofia I think I purchased 6 different lamps for my bedroom and eventually gave up. Color in general is hard. We redid our room in coastal colors, and I really wanted blue lamps on white night stands. I tell you, it was IMPOSSIBLE to coordinate blues. In the end, I discovered that lamps plus has a ton of lamp colors in their color plus collection and they match SW paint colors...so I got a bunch of paint swatches and tried to pick. I finally decided I was too nervous about committing that I just bought some mother of pearl lamps and called it a day. The internet makes it even worse, as color can be night and day different in person than it is on the screen.

Yes girl..do not settle! It is going to come together beautifully!

do they offer anything that goes with the bedcover?

anj_p, I can so picture what you went through searching for that Goldilocks lamp! Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps to know I’m not the only one who struggles with these choices!

Julie, bedcover is from Cultiver. They don’t offer coordinating shams. I found a couple of possibilities at Garnet Hill and Parachute. What do you think of these?

  • PRO

I like the garnet hill charcoal...might be a winner

Art is here! Still wrapped in plastic just in case :) The colors are beautiful with the wall color. So...dresser centered on the wall and art centered over dresser? How high?

  • PRO

Center art on wall than you can move the dresser left or right to line it up under art...so excited can’t wait to get that plastic off!

Me too! How high should the art be? Top edge level with top edge of door frame?

Also to think about. If we move the dresser a few inches one way or the other (I think I’d go to the right), the dresser will hide the outlet. Otherwise, we’ll be seeing the lamp cord forevermore.

Nudged right to hide the wall outlet.

  • PRO

That’s just fine you could hang the art off set to the left a bit and put lamp on right side of dresser.

  • PRO

middle of art should be around 62” from floor give or take...but I would say no more than 10” from top of dresser.

DH started to hang art and noticed two pretty ugly dents/tears in the silver frame. For a minute there, I was tempted to just hang it anyway. But then I reminded myself not to settle. Sending it back.

Guess what?! Shower curtain arrived from Etsy yesterday and it looks great! Colors are even better in person than online. Copper and brown colors tie in with the tile perfectly and it brings much needed gray, white, and blue. Love! It is a little long, but I can easily re-hem.
The Pottery Barn Odin rug wasn’t so lucky. The colors are kind of turquoise-y and sea glass green. So next I’m shopping for a 3’ x 5’ rug with gray-blue in it.
Speaking of shopping...also need to look for art for the bedroom wall. The replacement one arrived, also with dents to the frame. Hubby brought it in from the porch and said, “Wow, this box is mangled!”

Found this rug. Colors look good, but is it too dark?

Found it! This rug is lighter and is called Blue Dots”. It has dots just like the shower curtain. They were made for each other!
On to art for the bedroom...
