Exterior update help

last modified: 6 years ago

We just purchased a new home and I love the charm of the exterior with the porch but would love to modernize it. I’m thinking squaring our the columns, new door, removing the detail on the dormers. It needs a new roof in the next 1-5 years. Any thoughts on a black metal roof? We like the idea of a black and white exterior. the first house is ours and the next are inspiration pictures.

A black roof is ok unless you are in a very hot area of the country. Metal will be noisy when it rains or hails. That would bother me. I like it quiet in my residence. Would a black metal roof go well with the style of your house?

Thanks Elaine, I live in Massachusetts so it’s cold 9 months of the year. Didn’t think about the noise component, something to consider.

I vote for a metal roof! We have one, I was also concerned about the noise, but it is not noisy at all. We do have good insulation, which is a must in the Northeast anyway. Certainly more expensive than shingles, but lasts a lot longer!

Anjiz thank you for the inside scoop. I honestly haven’t seen a metal roof in our town. Can you tell me roughly the price differential between metal and asphalt shingle?

It’s been about four years since we purchased ours, but I want to say that it was about 1 1/2 to 2 times the price depending on the type of metal roof you choose. Maybe one of the pros can chime in?

I like the idea of a metal roof. Even though it is more expensive, it will last a lot longer.

    Replace the Victorian front door.

Landscape on either far side to hide the foundation. Maybe the one weeping plant on the left can be moved further forward.

The shutters should match the shape of the windows.

Love the ideas you mentioned and metal roof! Maybe paint the shutters white (or remove) along with the siding and brick (look into limewash). Fabulous house!

Aren't the windows just standard rectangles?

    Anna- they are arched.

I would remove the small arch detail over the front porch windows and perhaps the narrow arch over the front door. Squaring and beefing up the posts is a good idea. The dormer detail looks like exclamation marks. Just paint them to match the window trim. Lovely house in a beautiful setting.

Felizlady- great ideas! The windows are actually arched so I would have to replace them completely to have rectangular windows. The previous owner added a fan detail over the door to tie it into the windows. I will definitely remove the detail over the door and I would love to replace the Home Depot door with a wood one. Will definitely get rid of the exclamation point on the dormers. It looks like it’s a piece of plastic that can just be removed. Thank you!
