Kitchen cabinetry for newbies

I've taken my kitchen down to the studs and it's time to order cabinets. I need to educate myself on the best materials / specifications for the doors, drawers, box, etc. Do I want wood doors and a plywood box? Self-closing drawers? Which upgrades should I consider and which ones aren't worth it? Custom or semi-custom? I like white or navy shaker style cabinets. Thank you for your input!
