Coffee Table - what shape?

last modified: 6 years ago

Our coffee table looks dwarfed in our den. I need ideas of what to get and what shape? I was thinking round but my husband thinks rectangular would be better. Thanks in advance for your help!

The den is open to the kitchen.

I love this one but not sure?

The one similar to the one you posted is good for using 2 together. Nice clean lines.

I wouldn’t recommend lucite due to scratching factor. I suspect this is frequently used space so durability is a factor.

Thanks Flo - good options but not in love with any of them unfortunately :(. Let me know if you see any others that I could consider! So you suggest 48x48 in size? And not sure what you meant by "the one similar is good for using 2"??

    how about this one? it's 43" -

That could work but is a little small. You want size to fill square space in front of sofas. The rectangular one is a size where you would put two together on the long sides. This is example of that approach. If you look closely at this photo, you will see two rectangular tables put together. You need very flat sides to make this approach work. You seem to be leaning to silver and glass. The style of your sofas seems more traditional? Might just be the angle of photos?

The style of our home is more contemporary/transitional. Here is a picture of the kitchen that is open to the den.

The leather furniture leans more traditional.

Yes, the leather does lean towards traditional - but we like to mix it up. I like different color metals and am more transitional/contemporary overall.

Thank you Freedomplace1 - yes I understand. Eventually we may change sofas; however, we're keeping these for now.

I just noticed your comment. That is fine. Good to mix it up. Eclectic mixes can be very interesting. You can go any number of ways with your pieces.

Judy - everyone recommended a square table. I do like round because it softens the space. What are your thoughts on round vs square? And what dimensions?

I know you weren't a fan but I really liked the dark wood and marble option that flo showed. very unique. I think something with marble would look great as it would bring in the feeling of the kitchen but also lighten up the den area a bit... a few ideas...

I love those bunching tables! But they're only 24" wide so probably too small, right?

Did a little mock up for you. Get a second table like you had in photo and butt them together. Move one chair over to join grouping. Add drink tables and accessories plus art to go with your choices to that wall by kitchen. Add some greenery to coffee table. Think of coffee table as square and divide into quarters. Decor on each quarter.

Thanks so much Flo! Do you mean to pull the chair over all the time or just when we need the extra seating?

you would need 4 of the 24in tables to put together for a 48in square

    robinbohbot thanked Theresa Janssen

    or... 4 - 18in for 36in square.

You’re welcome. I would pull one chair over just onto corner of rug (couldn’t do it with this mock up tool) and one drink table and arrange so it isn’t in the line of sight to the TV. Then angle other chair in front of window toward TV with drink table giving that chair more breathing room. That would look and function very well for every day. Then when you need extra chair you can pull it over to seating area.

If two of your existing table, here is similar one that would work as a pair.

I meant if two of your existing table style isn’t flat enough on sides for butting together, this one could work. I do like the lower shelf on your existing table though. Very nice feature.

Thanks Flo Managan - But it’s too small as it is now, right?

  • PRO

Yes. You need bigger table to balance scale of sofa but also for max functionality too.

Thanks Flo Managan - what do you think of this one? It's 43x43 and 20" high.

48" square is smallest to keep proportional to your sofas. I will do scale sketch for you. Here is the problem with smaller table. The only way to get a proportional size is to keep in tune with size of sofas. As you can see, the solid line is the 48x48. That allows you to place table the proper 18" from the edge of sofa seat edge. The 43" sq. will force you to either place 18" from longer sofa or push further away from sofas which defeats the purpose of a coffee table. People can't reach when it is further away than 48". So 43x43 is too small. You could go larger, but not smaller. I assume most of the time you sit on the longer sofa? So you need that 48" length for that sofa. 48 is a standard size so it is also easier to find.

How high is the seat of your sofas from floor to top of seat? Usually, want to keep height of coffee table to height seat of sofas. 20" might be a bit high. Lower is easier to handle than higher. How high is that table you have?

Flo - you are so helpful! Our sofa seat is 18.5" from the floor. The height of our current coffee table is 19" (and it's 48x24 in size).

Regardless of shape, I like the idea of using a glass and metal coffee table becuase the large black sofa and love seat are so dense. This will lighten up the space and add a bit of bling.

Thanks Rachel - the sofas are actually a gray, not black. They look darker in the picture for some reason.

Great, yes, glass and metal will be very good with your sofas. OK, perfect. A standard rectangular coffee table size is 48x24. So, when you bank two of these together, you get 48x48! Yippee! You could go up to about 50-54" square.

The Noguchi style table is a choice but if you want contemporary look a larger table is a better choice. The Noguchi is a Mid-century iconic look. Keep your modern guest chairs in mind too.

Thanks - yes, I do want a more contemporary look. I love that silver & glass one that's 43x43 and am trying to find something larger that's similar I think.

not glass, but 50x50 and same ideas as the silver and glass table

    I like the wood table.

I’d get something like this -

Many types of ottoman coffee tables, and the style has been trending for some time now. They are being used in all different types of design setups.

Very pretty Flo - it seems so huge! You think that geometric design is ok with all the hard edges we have?

that's a great coffee table that flo shows. unique and to me the geometric design gives it more presence with the sofa and loveseat. provides a light feeling but more weight with the geometric pattern vs all glass

To test size, take boxes or other items and build up a 50 x 50 x 18 high. Place it 18” from both sofas. Use current table and just add on. That might help you see size will work beautifully.

Great idea Flo! I’ll do that!

I agree with these thoughts. I have a coffee table called the rotor coffee table, Italian and now discontinued. It has five stacked square surfaces that rotate so it like a moveable sculpture. What a beautiful piece!
