I would Kerdi everything

for the cmu wall i would suggest wet shimming A waterproof foam board after grinding off the plaster/mud as it mat be a bond breaker this way youll be able to get the wall plumb as well, some foam board mfg will wrrty that method, cement board is so last decade🤣

Your shower looks really beautiful, love the floor. Is the tile in the shower honed? That is a whole other project looking for large format with enough tooth to not be an issue. I believe I found a few today, but they are not white, really wanted white.

I see Durock has a board now. You like it better then the orange? Funny you say the cement board is so decade ago that's when I did my research. Bill and Mondo held my hand through the whole thing. Is the principal the same? This dog would like to stick to the tricks it already knows (as long as it's not found to be a problem). Like corners, inny-outtie, thin setting them in. 2" overlap with thinset? Or, is it more of the fancy caulk? I have used Noble seal before, for the linear drain and it was great to seal a pool light, that 10 years ago, no more leaks!

Back to the block wall, what if we were to set into modified thinset and also anchor the WP membrane board to the wall? I saw someone mentioned getting the approved fasteners drilled into the mortar lines. What is wet shimming? The wall is flat except where they put the lentil above and below, they are suppose to come back and square out the hole. I too am concerned with it letting go.

2 bits of sage advice. Your mixing and matching, make sure of 2 things, that you follow BOTH.

A. all mfg instructions B. industry standards (tcna or ttmac in Canada.)

Theres dozens of points to your questions. Many foam board mfg approve "wet shimming" w mortar.

Quickdrain has some good videos on liquid vs sheet membranes for just your type build and their drains, lean on them and notice how they referance tcna and mfg instructions.

Thanks Mint, I intend to absolutely do as instructed. I went to Durocks web site, didn't see the product that you used / mentioned at all. Is wet shimming where you use a layer of mud to bring wall plum? Otherwise please explain. I don't think plum is going to be an issue, the over-mud you see is going to be cleaned up. Oh you wanted me to scrape down past the plaster, oh oh.. As far as following the rules, that's why I kinda wanted to go back to what I already know. I know mixing products also gets the manufactures upset, I will leave it at that. I intend to use good products put them in correctly and never have to have make a call and have a conversation.

I have heard that Kerdi /other doesn't have to be shingled top over bottom but would like the insurance of doing it that way (water shed). This has me thinking of going with the wall board be it wonderboard - durock, first then the floor membrane up and then the kerdi over top. or other sheet membrane over the top.
