One Step Closer

Hi everyone this is my first time posting As I just discovered this site. That may be a good thing, Let me start by saying I don’t have photos Of the house. I don’t feel it’s needed to answer these two questions. We are rebuilding a beach house we inherited. This falls on the heels of completing a custom build. We have worked with a designer our builder uses. We have obtained her services for the beach house To help us make choices which she will order but the implementation will be virtual. Everything has gone smoothly for the most part of which I am extremely grateful As a mom of 4 with twins on the way.

question 1

we are doing a bunk room. The Plan is to use this for the boys. a design similar to this was proposed twin over twin.

Lakeside Bunk Room · More Info

and I love it . But came across this and thought having the full or queen beds would provide more sleeping. Areas.

Harbor Acres Coastal · More Info

we have the space as the only other thing in the room will be on the opposite wall and is a row of lockers . I was told the latter was a bad idea because “boys won’t share beds. “. We have a large family and besides friends we will mainly be having family and cousins. Am I wrong in thinking this is a more versatile option.? We are also doing a “ corner group” in two corners of the game room which is on the same level as the bunk room will be So there will be 4 twin beds for sleeping there.

my second question is seating in the great room. We have chosen slip covered sofas and chairs. White was proposed and its beautiful. However I really love a blue ticking type stripe. So it is now being proposed we do one sofa in solid light blue and one in a ticking stripe. Two of the chairs will be in

white. and two would be a wider stripe. Like a cabana stripe. I am feeling hesitant to not have the fabric on the sofas the same And the chairs too. It sounds “busy” to me. The chairs will face each other and there will be four chairs So basically a large seating area around a big coffee table. Two of the chairs will be lower backed and swivel for TV viewing if needed. Thsee are the pieces. The walls will be white and have nickel panels as well as some board and batten. In the kitchen we will be doing a combination of light blue and white cabinets . White counters. Backslash to come. Flooring is wire brushed white oak. Windows will be woven shades and simple panels. I can’t think of anything else that might influence the choice. Thank you for your responses.

Hello and welcome to the HOUZZ tip table. Sorry for your loss. Clearly you lost someone in order to inherit this house. But on the other end we hope you have many happy days in this beach house.

    Okay here goes;

Are the twins boys? Do you have all boys? Will guests be using this room also? Will this be a vacation home only and will you be renting or allowing folks to stay when you are not there?

Slipcovers can be nice because you can take them off and wash them. I must confess they annoy me because they slide all over the place and eventually I just take them off because I get tired of straightening them out.

White is so wonderful because you can add all of your color into the room with your accents, pictures, rugs and so on. I agree the thin stripped couch made me dizzy just to look at it. If it was me I would stick with all one color furniture be it white or blue.

Please remember what ever fabric you decide on it needs to be durable with all of the sand and sea that is nearby. It is nice to have fabric that can be cleaned easily and cushion covers that can be removed and washed.

Wow, what a great opportunity! I have seen many bunk rooms in Coastal Living, and they are fabulous. Twin over twin seems to be most common, and probably your best bet. The others take up a lot more space and will probably not get much more use. Maybe you could add a daybed on the wall across.

Love the sofas you chose, and I would get both the same color. The stripes give a nautical vibe. Four white chairs would be a great complement.

I love the choices you've described. Couple questions.

    1. How many boys will be in the room?

    2. When you say lockers do you mean school lockers? Will there be dressers or other furniture in

the room? If not where will items like socks and underwear etc go? Lockers won't hold much.

    3. If you were to do the full/queen would it have to be under a window?

    4. Are these stripes the actual stripe? You sad ticking stripe and neither of those stripes are ticking stripes.

    5. Are these all Serena & Lily pieces?

My immediate thoughts are if there are no dressers or closets with drawers etc. I would do the twin over twin so that the bottom beds can have drawers/pull out trundles under them. Lockers are cute but they don't provide a lot of hanging storage and no drawers. I am also assuming by your description of them being on the opposite wall of the built in bunks that a window must be on one side of the room between the two? I never place a bed below a window if I can help it.

For the slip covered I love them all. But that is a lot of fabric. Have you considered doing two of the four chairs in a rattan to break up all the fabric? Something like this

I would be inclined to do the sofas the solid blue and two of the chairs the stripe. The small stripe could be really great on the straight sided swivel chairs. You can have it rail loaded horizontally on the sides and back and it would be fantastic. Or on the white chairs a solid stripe like this would be great

To answer some of your questions we have three boys. this house will not be a rental. Only family. We have a very large family. My husband is one of 6 and I am one of 3. The bunk room will be for kids. A lot of young kids in the family as well as a lot of teens And young adults. Again big family.

There is no closet in the room. It was removed to accommodate enough space to do the bunks. The lockers are refurbished school lockers. They have two pull out metal bins in the bottom part on each locker. We figured those could be used in place of drawers. This level will have one other bedroom which will be an “ adult” guest room. This level also has a game room where we are doing to corner groups that will be cushioned to serve as sofas but also can be used as beds (4) big TV a pool table and ping pong table and we are currently adding a bank of cabinets and counter and a single fridge..

The furniture is custom from Lee Industries. according to the designer. All fabrics outdoor fabrics.

Your are correct if we did the queen beds one would be under a window. I love the idea of the trundle drawer. Would that be difficult to pull in and out? When you say trundles and drawers would there also be drawers ? Where?

the stripes are a narrow stripe. Almost like a seer sucker . I like both of the chairs you show. Not sure of the fabric on the bamboo one. Also wonder how comfortable that would be. Also would that be too much if our dining chairs will be rattan ? The wide stripe down the Center of the white chair is interesting. Can that be done on a slip covered chair? Would you do that in the solid light blue and then do the sofas in the small stripe? Do you have a photo of the other stripe you’re talking about?

hope I answered everything thank you.

To add a point, Sunbrella fabric is ideal in this situation. Especially if you will be renting it out. I would mix patterns and prints to be beach colors but not real literally totally beachy. Gets too kitchy for my taste. Bbl with some ideas.

  • PRO

I am sure that is correct as If I recall correctly Lee makes Serena and Lilly upholstery.

The stripe down the chair can be done in any color. I think the navy would be striking along with the light blue. I cant speak to the comfort of the other chairs just was thinking in terms of breaking up so many upholstered pieces. Is the dining area in the same room?

As far as the trundle it would be a trundle or drawers. I suppose you could put a row of drawers above the trundle but it would make the bottom bed quite high off the ground and I don't know with ceiling height how that would configure head room wise for the upper and Lower bunks. That said I am not sure if this will have a ladder or walk up steps but I have seen each step be a drawer before on this configuration.

To avoid any issues with the sleep situation, I would do two more trundles under the lower bunks. As for the great room, I like your fabric choices but feel the English rolled arms on the seating will be less than ideal for a beach house where people want to lounge about and may need more of an armrest to lean on or to prop a pillow on for a nap.

Thank you. This house will not be kitchy. The goal is to have a very Hamptons feel. New England feel. Im Not quite sure what beach colours mean. Besides blue and white there’s will be small amounts of tan. The boys room is navy, chambray and rain boot yellow....lockers will be lacquered in that color there will be 4 of these side by side .

We are doing a shade in there in navy sailboat fabric

in the girls room we are doing light blue and white check. Proposed accent is coral. I’m not sold on the coral. My daughter is almost 3 so naturally she wants pink.

as far as nautical stuff there are two items we will be using in the house. One is a large sailboat model that will be mounted above the fireplace. The other is the wheel off my husbands grandfathers boat. We haven’t found a place for it yet.

we love the traditional feel of the sofas. These we’re also recommended so the room doesn’t look cluttered? She used a different term with all the sofa and chair arms.

Flo, you like the mix of fabrics? You would combine them all like recommended?

  • PRO

The style is referred to as English “rolled arm”. One tip. It is easier to change out pillows so consider more solid colors on big pieces and use pattern for pillows. Overall, I think you have a nice plan. I love the bright yellow as accent. I am hunting a fabric with dark blues and yellow fruit. I will find in good time. Might be fun one to add.

To answer your question. I would either do the stripe on the sofas and then keep the chairs solid or I would do the sofas solid and do stripes on the chairs. I would decide which stripe I like best and go with one. I still think you can do the middle stripe down the chair and stripes on the other two chairs.

Is the yellow in the boys room being carried through out the house?

I pulled some different stripes to show you how a different stripe on the swivel chair and the solid navy stripe on the white chair could work with the solid blue sofa. It is very Ralph Lauren IMO and it sounds like your description of New England what I envision. I like the navy fabric with the white stripe personally. It grounds the space a bit.

The rounds are Fathead pillows you could use in bunk room but also bring into main room for kids on floor.

I love pillow ticking and consider it a neutral. I’d like both sofas in that. Despite the fabrics being stain resistant and easy to clean, the ticking will absolutely hide dirt far better than a solid .

Thank you. The beds will each have one booster pillow. Honestly I am drawing a blank ar

to what fabric I signed off on😁 so this will be a surprise. I recall a nautical flag one and a yellow check one and something else. But gosh . We will chalk this one up to foggy pregnancy brain.

As far as the yellow being in the rest of the house , no it isn’t. I’m not sure I could handle the boldness of that through out the home. Colors are white, the chambray blue, navy and tan.

i actually like both the stripes on those chairs better than the proposed cabana stripe. Maybe I just don’t like wide stripes. That’s something to think about. Do you think the navy chair looks like blue jeans? The house had a denim sectional it. Welll Loved. Who knows how long it had been here. My husband doesn’t recall it ever not being in the house. I dont want anything that looks like denim. We are trying to keep it light. Funny enough the denim sectional is staying in the family. My brother in law has some strange attachment to it.

thank you all. This is helpful.

"Do you think the navy chair looks like blue jeans?"

No. Of course it will depend on which fabric you choose. Did you say you are doing Sunbrella? I know they offer some nice Navy stripes and the fabric doesn't look denim.

LOL about the denim sectional. I had one! Loved that thing! It was so comfortable and the kids could just beat the snot out of it. Very popular look in the mid 90's. Maybe you brother in law has fond memories of "summer nights" on the sectional LOL! Gosh maybe I shouldn't have said that out loud LOL! I couldn't resist. If he is married I am sure his wife is "thrilled" about bringing that to her home.

We actually have a running joke about the reasons he is attached to the sectional which may or may not echo your theory. Lucky for my sister in law it won’t be in their home but in a mountain house. which means we will all get the joy of seeing the thing again!

i sent the designer a request for more fabric options with stripes.

What I meant about the yellow is just small touches. Like a vase of daisies, or gold items on a coffee table like a brass anchor. That kind of thing. I do like smaller stripes but kind of hard to bounce in now and give you second thoughts when you have a capable designer. Plus, while growing baby(s)! Give yourself a break. I am sure it is going to look and function very well. Heck, if it doesn’t, it will be a wonderful family story. “Remember when mom was pregnant wit so and so and got those crazy stripes! Lol. Just kiddy of course. Best of luck on everything!

    Hello Blue,

I sure hope that answering these questions doesn't step on your designer's toes. He or she may already have the answers to these questions and is putting time, research and heart into the design layout and accessory details for you. I know that I do for my clients. Like any artist, designers put their heart into their work in an effort to make their client's homes beautiful, comfortable and functional. Your designer is probably doing the same. We love what we do and especially love it when our clients are happy with the final product.

What feedback has your designer given you regarding these questions?

I wish you well and hope we have not offended your designer.

Flo I thought all those pillows you showed and fabrics were for all over the house. A yellow vase would be pretty on the island or something. Accessorizing hasn’t really been discussed. Probably something that will be done later virtually perhaps. Right now more furniture and renovation. Hence them needing my decision on sofa fabric and built in bunks. Thank you for explaining.

I guess I must have missed the memo that if you were working with a designer you weren’t allowed to ask for opinions. I’m a little confused as I’ve been reading through many threads that people have started bashing their interior designer and Others who are asking for opinions and no one had any issues offering opinions. So are you saying if someone works with an interior designer that forfeits them asking for opinions?

maybe my two questions weren’t clear enough, and I somehow made everyone think I was looking for an overall design for my house?

Really all I wanted was an opinion on queen under twin vs twin over twin and if the proposed two different sofa fabrics would look to busy. Anything else was answering the questions being asked.

Two things I myself was not confident enough on to pull the trigger. After two years of building a new home and then the unexpected renovation of the beach house I was on decision overload.. I wasn’t specifically looking for designers advice just general opinions. Although I thought I had been very appreciative of all the advice given I guess Ive been dismissed From a public forum where thousands of people, designers and non designers with great ideas and opinions are exclusive if you admit to having a designer and are Just asking for opinions on two selections.

as for my designer , she gave her opinions. But Im the one that says yes or no and as I said those two things stumped me. As far as offending her I think that’s a pretty far stretch. she seems confident enough that she isn’t threatened by me asking an opinion Of someone else other than her.

again thank you to everyone who was helpful with their advice.

Coral will grow with your daughter a lot more than pink will. Perhaps pink can be in accessories such as throw pillows that can be easily changed as she gets older.

You didn’t ask to many questions. Clearly confused by the warm welcome, questions, great advice and then to be dismissed . I clearly stated in my posti I was working with a designer. Seems if anyone had an issue with that they wouldn’t have bothered commenting, asking questions and giving suggestions. To give a warm welcome then be dismissed is rather Jekyll & Hyde.

Suggest you stay with twin/bunk beds for your own boys and invest in inflatable beds or inflatable water floats and sleeping bags for the visiting friends and cousins. The inflatable water floats could be used outside during the day and inside during the night -- and/or on a deck or porch.

Suggest you furnish the living room with comfortable seating -- ?perhaps two seat sofas? -- for as many adults as you expect usually will be in the lake house at any one time and consider modern bean bag chairs for the children and teens.

In all candor ... if you re-make the lake house to be furnished comfortably for multiple families, you're likely to end up with more visitors than you might want.

The older your boys get, the less likely they'll be inclined to share a bed with each other or anyone else ... except a girl.

Like the blue, shades of blue and blue/white combinations. Girls and boys will likely both like light blue.

    I. Have been looking for yellow vases for the island like Flo suggested. I’m finding that they all seem quite modern. Or quite small I found this and I’m wondering if this would be a good substitute for a vase I’m pretty sure the lid is removable. Would this work or would it leak if I tried to put daisies in it. I’m not sure as I’ve never had a temple jar before so excuse me if that’s a dumb question. Also excuse my questions not having question marks as for some reason they aren’t working on my iPad when I try to use them onthis site. Thanks

I always put narrow tall glass into any vase to hold fresh flowers and water. You can get plain glass round narrow vases at Hobby Lobby or other supply places. Put the vase in first, then add water about 1/2 full and then flowers. I have several pitchers and antique coffee and tea pots and thus trick works really well.

If you are thinking about roll out trundles under your bunk beds (a good idea)....what is your flooring? Wood? Carpet? I have had experience with trundles under a day bed. They work better on wood than on carpet. Throw rugs (look at Dash and Albert for wonderful rugs) have to be removed for trundles to be pulled out. Also...another thought....your boys won’t be small for long. And twins are small beds for young men to sleep in. Those queens will be fought over sooner rather than later!

Returning to your question about the sofas. I would get them both in the same fabric. The ticking stripe. Then two major pieces of upholstery will match. And the four chairs (two in each fabric that you decide on) will seem less “busy” to your eye. Large pillows can unite the pieces, too. I love your aesthetic. I, too, love Blue and white (and bright yellow!). Please keep posting... Good luck with your wonderful project!

7" does seem rather small for a pitcher. I love the color of the yellow on the pitcher though. Maybe you can go somewhere that sells it and see it in person? That said how big is the kitchen island you want this to go on?

Did you ever decide on the upholstery fabric?

Our flooring is wood everywhere but the bottom level and there it is plank vinyl that is a close enough match to the wood. As we could get. The boys room is navy blue and white checkerboard vinyl as is the bathroom down there.

fabrics the sofas are solid light blue and two matching chairs in same fabric.

then two swivel chairs in this stripe

I don’t know exact measurements of island but it’s big. We are able to get 6 barstools at it.

i enquired about a fabric that had yellow in it along with the blue and tan that will be through out the house. I was sent this but it’s blurry and I’m not sure of exactly what it looks like or if I like the green it it. It’s being proposed for shades on a wall of windows In the kitchen That runs over the sink counter which has no top cabinets and around to a large eating area . It seems like it would be busy. I’m debating keeping the windows bare.
