(1) Let's say you don't have anyone staying overnight, but you have guests over for an evening. Do you want them to have to go through the guest bedroom to get to the bathroom?

(2) Let's say you have an out-of-town relative staying with you for a week, and one night during that week you have other guests over for a big get-together. How will your relative feel about folks traipsing through their bedroom to use their bathroom?

I know that if I were the out-of-town relative in scenario #2, I would not want other folks going through my bedroom to use my bathroom.

Can the bathroom have 2 doors...one to the guest bedroom & one to a hallway for day guests.

I stayed in a house with a nice setup for this too. It had a powder room for day guest and a full bath for overnight guests.

I hesitate to post this-but we had a similar dilemma and resolved in a nontraditional way...

We don't expect to have many guests using this room. I expect it will be more heavily used as a quiet / away space, especially for the dogs during thunderstorms.

We decided to have a half bath that functioned as the "powder room", with a sliding glass door to another part of the bathroom that houses another sink / counter and tub / shower. Guests can park all their toiletries in the separate room with the shower. When they are staying, the powder is still "semi-public" space. And no one is going through their room to get to the half bath.

It does, however, bring them through the 1/2 bath area to the bedroom which is - as I said- nontraditional.

"A nontraditional way" is an understatement. It would be more fun if door "20" was shelves for towels that opened when the toilet was flushed four times in a row.

And this is exactly why I hesitate to post.

Besides the condescension, I have no earthly idea how someone sees excessive toilet flushing out of a bathroom layout.

I’ve lived in another house where the powder room has a shower in a small room off the powder. There is only one door to the bathroom, from the hall, and a guest bedroom is nearby. I do like Janni’s plan of having another sink and vanity in with the tub/shower, it allows all the personal items to be kept private.

This was what we did for a powder room/guest bathroom. Solved a lot of space issues for us.

I think riverrat''s solution is very workable. However, I would probably replace the door between the bedroom and bath (#10) with a pocket door to keep it more out of the way.
