Kitchen Design feedback- prep sink location?

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello! I am currently designing our kitchen for our new build and would love some advice. The kitchen is located to the right upon entry to the house. I have marked out where the main kitchen appliances are in the below drawing (DO= double oven). I know I want a prep sink since I spend most of my time prepping and chopping veggies and want to face people as I am cooking as much as possible. I chose to put the fridge on the sink wall since I don't like the idea of having the double ovens next to the entry way and it seems like an ideal place as it is out of the way for the main working area (stove side). Would you move the prep sink to be closer to the other sink and fridge or leave it as is? I think it seems silly to have two sinks near each other, so I am trying to be mindful of that... I also want space next to the prep sink for the cutting board. I am the main cook in the house, though I will at times solicit help from my husband on prepping (chopping items) while I tend to other things at the stove. The island size is 8'x5'. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thank you very much!

The function of the kitchen will be better if you put the fridge near the pantry, and ovens by the front entry by default. You can add a side-loading cabinet to the oven cabinet, for jackets, brooms, charging station, etc., to create a buffer. The fridge and prep sink will work better in a triangle with the cooktop, near the pantry.

Fridge and ovens side-by-side is a popular layout, and you can use the island as landing space. In both plans I recessed a full-depth fridge into the pantry wall, to provide more cold storage:

Thank you so much for the response @mama goose_gw zn6OH! I wasn't notified of your comment, so apologies for this delay. I have seen the DO and fridge next to each other as a common theme but wouldn't that make the appliances work harder by having such drastic temperatures next to each other? I live in the islands, so I find myself particularly cautious with the coldness of the fridge! I see what you mean about the working triangle, especially with the ovens by the entry and having a side loading cabinet.

Is there a particular reason you changed the island to go vertically instead of horizontal? This has been a big debate with my husband and I haha so I appreciate a different perspective.

I really like how you moved the fridge into the pantry wall!

An island works better for prep if it's parallel to the range, but I can't tell what's beyond the island to the right, or to the bottom of your plan. Maybe a wonderful and magical view to the 'south' would make me change my mind. I know everyone thinks those seated at the island should have a view, but if I'm going to spend time prepping a meal, I want the better view. ;)

As for the oven/fridge side-by-side dilemma--you have space to use a 33" cab for a 30" oven, or leave a gap between the oven cab and fridge surround for a sheet of foam insulation, covered by filler/trim. You might ask the question on the Appliances forum, just for peace of mind. I think the biggest issue with the fridge and ovens in that configuration is the chance that someone will get too enthusiastic when opening the fridge door and dent it on an oven handle--so keep that in mind when looking at appliances.
