I agree that subway tile might introduce too many vertical lines. What about installing subway tiles in a herringbone pattern? Or instead of using subway tiles, use 4x4 square tiles installed diagonally (i.e., as diamonds like the current backsplash, but smaller tiles in a light color)? My first thought was to use something with curves, such as the fish-scale type or arabesque shapes, but those are not to everyone's taste.

Regardless of what you pick, I'd recommend a low-contrast grout.

Replacing the counters and backsplash do seem like they will be a huge improvement in your kitchen.

I would live with it as for 6 months to a year and see what you do and do not like. You may decide yo want to change the layout and in turn have wasted your money on the tops and backsplash.

Agreed with @millworkman. I would live with it for a while to determine what you like and what you don't. You may determine that the b/s is the least of your concerns. Other needs within the house may pop up that need more immediate attention. I would hold off and in the meantime, save save save.

I agree that is never is wrong to wait and live in your home for a while before

plunging in to renovate.

That said, I did some googling. I think subway would look fine.

The diamond pattern might be dated in this picture but it still gives you

an idea of options for headboard cabinets.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I was pleased to see the pic of the subway tile, but really like the look of the Cloe tile, too. I think it’s good advice to make the decision once the counters are in.

Would love to see what the final result is. I'm getting ready to redo a teeny, tiny kitchen and was considering bead board cabinets for my mid 1930's beachy, cottage. I always wanted white subway tile and was thinking the lines will be an issue and googled ideas and found this page. I have not committed to the cabinets just yet will be doing so this week. I can change to shaker or shaker with a little added trim detail (would match the linen closet). I would love to see what you have done with your backsplash and counters. I love carrarra marble but am concerned about scratching, staining etc.

Avoid any kind of random pattern as it will fight with the linear look of your cabinets. You might consider using your countertop as the backsplash for a more simple look, and don’t be afraid of subway tile. A 3x6 that matches the white of your cabinets is a classic, timeless look!!
