Horatio is one of my favorites. A little past peak here in southern MN. Mine is growing at the base of a 75ft cottonwood tree in sandy soil and does great. Very little TLC needed, just wish the blooms lasted longer. However the foliage holds up well all season so it stays nice looking.

And depending on the weather It is my experience that Horatio foliage can give a nice colour change in the FALL.

I have been wanting non-dwarf aruncus seeds for a few years and haven't found them. Was thrilled when a local farm selling eggs also offered to give me a division of their goatsbeard. YEA!! I'm going to divide that sucker and fill my garden! Don't know if I have a male or female yet.

gooseneck loosestrife, Lysimachia clethroides. Before you think I am nuts, I love this plant

'gg', a girl after my own heart...I love the look of this plant also. With trepidation I bought this plant several years. I was shaking in my boots trying to figure out a location to put it. But It didnt really matter as the next season it did not return...crazy...I couldnt even keep an invasive plant alive :(.

My biggest failure this season was aruncus. I sowed seed under grow lights and nothing ever came up. Has anyone had success with growing aruncus from seed? I had hoped to use it as a groundcover so buying plants would be prohibitive... unless you tell me that they are easily divisible and that's the way to go.

I like pretty much anything with a red stem because it adds another layer of interest.

I agree for sure but my Horatio specimens have stems that are plain old green. I dont recall them ever going reddish...hmm.

peren.all are the stems on your plant always reddish or maybe it develops later?

rouge the stems are red from the get go, it is a feature of 'Horatio'. I seem to recall you had 'Kneiffii' and/or 'Zweiweltenkind' - 'Child of Two Worlds'? As far as I can tell 'Horatio' is the only one with red stems. I have to wonder if your beauty was mislabeled. They are all terrific!

The only two I have remaining are what I had had "special" ordered years back (as Horatio).

My aruncus is quite nice this year but I have camera issues lol.

But! I did want to pipe in on the gooseneck loosestrife. I used to sell flowers at market, and ended up sharing a table with a friend who sold greens. I would help her grow her stuff at the local farm, and she would let me cut whatever flowers I wanted from her very... relaxed... garden lol. Well, this woman grew gooseneck loosestrife, bishop's weed, and chinese lanterns, among other things, and they NEVER got out of control! For eight seasons I marveled that everything stayed in its spot. Very odd. But I loved the gooseneck loosestrife. So beautiful in bouquets! But I was too afraid to plant my own.

Rouge, when I was a new gardener, I tried chameleon plant THREE times before giving up. It died all three times. Which I now realize is a blessing. My LOtV have taken 20 years to get to a decent sized clump. And just this week I realized my ditch lilies at the end of the driveway only had two stems in the entire large clump. Two! Should be closer to 50. I thought to myself, geez, what kind of gardener am I who can't grow ditch lilies lol?

Dee, that is too funny. I would say you are a gardener without a good ditch, so the ditch lilies were clearly in the wrong location, right?

I have gooseneck loosestrife in a live-and-let-live pollinator bed. It's spreading, Still trying to decide if i should try to contain it with 10" barrier for bamboo. I like it, too. I didn't know it was a good container plant, but I'll remember that!

Here this thread starts with the subject of Aruncus and now it is focused on an invasive plant which I now want to "try" again!. I wish deanna and or 'gg' lived closer so I could be so bold as to dig up a clump :)

Well rouge I am closer than either and I would be more than happy to share! I am a fan but they are aggressive.
