New Home Floorplan - Help with kitchen layout

I’m thinking about building a new home and the builder is willing to tweak the floor plan to meet my needs.

I want a large island. Check.

I want an open floor plan. Check.

I want a big pantry. Check.

I want a bar area. No Check.

I don’t think I want anything IN the island.

In my current home I have 28” to the right of the cooktop and a sink with no useable counter space to the left and it sucks. So I thought I wanted more space to the left and right of the cooktop, but with a giant island right behind me, maybe it's not a big deal?

The original layout had frig to the left of cooktop and cooktop was centered in the remaining space and in wall oven/microwave is where frig is on this revised plan.

Question 1: is this layout workable?

Question 2: if I go back to original layout, is that enough workspace next to the stove?

Question 3: anyplace to put a bar area? Maybe Where oven/micro is on attached revised plan? Question 4: is this a stupidly large pantry??

You seem to have reservations about the layout--with good reason.

    1) It's not a good layout. The fridge is stuck in the corner and anyone who wants to access it will have to walk though one of the work zones. It takes valuable prep space to the left of the sink. The fridge needs to be back in the original space, on the perimeter of the kitchen, where it's convenient for others, but part of the prep triangle. That leaves space for dish storage to the left of the sink.

    2) You don't need workspace next to the cooktop. You need a prep sink on the island, where you can work facing the living areas, in a compact triangle.

    3) Use a range, rather than cooktop and wall oven, and you'll have space for a bar area with a wind cooler or beverage fridge. The MW can go in a drawer across from the fridge. Most MW'd items come from the fridge--leftovers, frozen snacks, butter for melting.

    4) Too much wasted space in the pantry. I adjusted the pantry and powder room spaces. They are shorter and the pantry is wider, so the door can move down a few inches. Of course, that might affect the second floor layout.

Compare the original to the following two layouts:

Fridge on range wall, island in original orientation, bar on clean-up sink wall:

Fridge and bar switched, island turned and reconfigured:

There are bigger issues with the design that influence the kitchen's design. All of the spaces shown could be better laid out to create better spatial relationships. The powder room should be located/positioned to provide more privacy (I normally do not locate them near the front door). The one sided pantry is inefficient. The space provides for seating at the island is more generous than needed. The kitchen shape is not conducive to an efficient layout. The ceiling transition between spaces are happenstance due to random relationships between spaces.

Consider this conceptual layout of the powder room and pantry. The kitchen is just thrown together. The rest of the spaces require more information to advise.

Also consider posting the entire design for review, but as you may already know . . .

WARNING: Posting your entire floor plan opens you up to facts you may not want to know, but should. Be prepared for suggestions that will make for a better design. Keep a thick skin, open mind, sense of humor, and a glass of wine within arms reach. You may not enjoy it, but everyone else will and you will be better off in the long run if you heed well the advice.
