Congratulations! It seems that the floor tile and carpet on the stairs lends themselves to furnishings in warm neutrals. I would start by putting together some ideabooks on Houzz with interiors you like, sorted by room. Then, there is a free app called Magicplan. It creates a floor plan by scanning the room (measurements are not 100% correct but can be adjusted) It is immensely useful for getting the scale of your furniture right.

I am open to painting and changing out floors.

I would absolutely change the flooring. The existing tile color is not neutral, too splotchy, and is too hard to decorate around. Whether you go with hardwood, tile, or carpet, a neutral or natural color will be easier to live with. Paint is easy to change. Flooring is a big decision you only want to make once. I would avoid gray unless you only want to install carpet. If you prefer area rugs, a minimally-patterned porcelain or travertine tile or a natural-color wood floor will give you more flexibility in decorating.

It appears to be a fairly large space, but not sure, and room dimensions, floor plan and/or more pictures would help.

Wood flooring would be a nice upgrade. But large rugs could cover the tile, and if there are two seating areas in the space that would be two rugs. The color variations in the tile don’t bother me, it has a Mediterranean feel to it.

Rugs are the last item to choose. I would need to know a bit more about your lifestyle before commenting on anything. I do agree idea books are a great way to let us see what you like. I do suggest you try to keep each rooms idea book searate and narrow the choices for each to about 5 at most. IMO the floors are the first step they will set the tone and backdrop to the rest of the decisions and I would plan on the whole house having the same floor except the bathrooms and laundry.

Some general furniture/decor ideas:

Are you in a hot climate? If so I think concrete floors are beautiful. They can add color and/or shine to them. Search some on this site and see for yourself.

Need a floor plan posted with exact measurements. Include doors and windows.

It appears that the flooring also goes into the kitchen and if so, does it go elsewhere? Are you open to replacing all the tile in whatever room it is in? And do we have to concern ourselves with a budget? As flooring can take a big chunk.

Certain warm color palettes would look good with your tiles, but if you are considering different flooring, it would offer you more choices.

Start looking at window treatments. Make note of which way the windows face...windows which get the most sun may need an extra layer of something for light/heat control. Also consider which windows face a neighbor’s house because you may need something for privacy, especially at night with the interior lights on.

My first step would be to open up the second level more..to decrease the cavernous feel...replace the upper half walls with railings...this alone can define the look of the space by your choice of railing style..while making the whole space feel bigger...

It appears you have no view from the lower windows at the entrance...is that a neighbors wall or yours?..i would at the least paint it a color or add any kind of tall greenery that will survive there...otherwise a wall of sheers will allow light in while camouflaging the lack of view...

btydrvn, it's the neighbour's wall. Yes, plants with lighting are needed there.

If concrete floors appeal to you they can also be a beautiful green color...acid wash finish...which shows more varied colorations..one i have loved for years...this looks amazingly like stone and is timeless ..and comes in several other colors ...depending on your climate they are ideal for in floor heating as well..

I won't be making any construction changes, except the kitchen. I would like hardwood floors and white walls.

I love hardwood floors - Either color is very nice, the darker a little more dramatic. Where are you located as that can influence design choices?

Just to let you be aware that flooring that dark shows every speck of dirt. Also, you want to choose your paint color after everything is selected. If you paint before, the color you decided may not compliment the rest.

Are you planning to take the hardwood flooring into the kitchen?

Congratulations on the new home purchase!!! While there is certainly a lot to consider when designing the entire space, starting with your flooring (as your re. above) is the best! My only caveat to this would be consider your kitchen, first. Depending on what you intend to do with the space, installing the flooring there at the same time is best - less quarter round molding/trim needed which translates to a cleaner look and less maint.

For flooring - personally, there is NOTHING I love more than a piano black stain; however, every dark finish will show dirt and debris...every bit of if, no matter what. If pets or children are a factor, this may not be the best fit. This all depends on lifestyle needs!

In my opinion, there is never a better option or a more neutral base than a light oak floor. Of course this can go warmer or lighter depending on the intended feel. However, oak, specifically light oak, is timeless and a good base for any design. This will lend itself to future design trends/changes as your taste changes. This is also a benefit should you ever consider to sell the home.

It works with traditional, modern, contemporary, rustic, EVERYTHING!!!

I do recommend on holding off for paint. Too many other large ticket items to select first, and then the paint which is the least expensive part. You want to make sure everything works for the intended aesthetic of the room!
