I would lighten the room and try to bring in some lighter colors. I don't know what style you like. You could buy a table with a buffet to go where the shelves are.

I am thinking possibly a painted table and chairs with a washed oak top?

Would also delete the shelving to the left of the kitchen area and replace with long low console that you love....not to match the dining set, different and not oak or washed oak. Put your art work to one side of console and a lamp on the other side of console and a wide empty of vessel of some sort....consider changing out your chandelier and the black/orb knobs in the kitchen to Brass for a more modern look...bottom of chandelier should be 30-36 inches above the table top.

Hi Tricia, in order to help, I need a photo of what you would like your space to look like or describe it. Otherwise, I am just guessing. Does that make sense?

Can you replace your shelves that currently hold your pictures and replace it with a buffet? I agree a round table would fit better in your space.

If you paint your oak cabinets consider a primer filler designed especially for oak cabinets.....you will get a lot of graining texture thru the white paint.Addicted2Decorating is a great blog that e plains and walks you thru painting oak kitchen cabinets!
