How on earth do you think we can help with this decision. You either like or don’t like an eat in kitchen totally up to you. If you take that table out what would you put there is the qestion to ask yourself IMO it seems to be the right space for the DR

Design wise and flow wise — also what kind of table would one put there? I mean that formal table seems out of place and I can’t change paint or color so how would you design the space if it were a more casual DR?

This is personal preference but if it were my home, I'd use the dining room as a dining room. I like eat in kitchens but I'd do a bench against the wall with a table for more of a banquette style. it looks like the lighting in the dining room would need to change if you used it for eating though.

I always liked having a dining table in the kitchen. We were more likely to use it on a day to day basis. Plus, if we were doing some elaborate thing like cookie decorating or egg dying, it was a nice place to set up for that.

Just use the dining area if you prefer.

@anj_p that’s what I’m thinking —how would you design that casual eating space so it doesn’t clash with dining space that’s right next door? I’m going crazy searching furniture but don’t want to be too matchy matchy

not sure what you mean by clashing? since they're in different rooms I wouldn't worry too much about it. you just need to find something that works with your kitchen cabinets for your eat in space.

Are you sure the walk through is meant to be a dining room? There's no chandelier and it seems narrow for anything more than a table.

Has a cap for light on it and realtor said that original model was dining area. I can go either way. I am open to suggestions. This is my current dining room (my house) — need to decide if sell or keep (table is 54 round)

What are the room's dimensions? The pictures are misleading. In one shot, it looks as if could be a dining room and in the other, it looks too narrow. If I were faced with this dilemma, I wouldn't decide before moving in. I'd place my table in the kitchen to start and see what type of eating and seating arrangements our family prefers. Counter height wouldn't be an option for me. It's not always obvious figuring out how to use a house before living there a while. And there's no right or wrong. It's really a matter of what works for your family. Congrats on your new house, btw!

Aha. Now I better understand the dilemma. Apologies if I missed the measurements in the initial post, btw. The Pros here are good at figuring out dining room layouts with table measurements. A round table in a square room often makes sense. If memory serves, two feet behind a dining chair is the recommendation. Here's a Houzz article that discusses how to choose a dining table. As for the house style and furniture matching, it all depends on your budget and decor expectations. New furniture is expensive. I make do with what I have in a new place then decide what I need for it after living there a while. Furniture can be painted, etc.

I think your round table would work in the dining room. I wouldn't use a counter height table in the kitchen as I think too many taller tables dwarf a space. plus they tend not to be as comfortable. I agree with previous posters that you should take your stuff, live with it for awhile and see what arrangement works for you.
