So I am In a build as we speak and am having shallow end depth regrets, although my PB talked me off the ledge today. Anyway, I posted a depth question a couple days ago and this reply I think applies to your situation, as referenc my kids are 8 and 6 also I assume s/he meant 4 feet not inches....

yesterdayThis is a personal preference thing. Our current pool has a shallow end that is just under 3.5 feet. It works for when we have little kid guests. We are empty nesters, so our current pool is largely unused. When our kids were a little older than yours, we had a pool that was mostly 4” deep, and they complained that they wished for more deep end. They definitely were not wanting a more shallow, shallow end.

Speak with a structural engineer versed in pools. The pool must conform to a certain slope ratio at 3:1. For every 3' of length there is a 1' drop. This will affect the transition from the shallow break to the deep end.

More than likely when filing for your permits, a structural detail will be required anyway.
