Let's nail this one down a little further. Exactly where? How large an area? And exactly why?

My initial reaction is "No," but under some very specialized circumstances in one or two locales you might barely be able to get away with it with protection and a lot of care in small installations.

If we're talking a full lawn in Montague Township, forget it. It's too cold. A small patch yu can put under cover in winter in a coastal town where temperatures really don't go under 20 and you're willing to reseed? Mohawk Bermuda might just barely manage--and I do mean just barely.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, but if you're a Grass Whisperer, you might be able to pull it off.

Northeastern NJ right on the border of NYC and probably a little under half an acre worth of grass I’d say If we’re counting shade areas too. I guess it’s a no go then... I’m not willing to commit myself to a full time lawncare job. I may as just go with zoysia since I see a lot of those around my neighborhood.

Go with Meyer Zoysia if you must have a warm-season grass. You're going to be happier with the results. Bermuda will be an effort in futility and yearly reseeding as it dies every winter.

If you were looking for a low-maintenance, self-repairing grass, Kentucky bluegrass might be another option for you. It requires less care in that area than Zoysia will, about the same amount of food, will annoy your neighbors far less (bluegrasses don't invade, Zoysia will), and Zoysia absolutely will not tolerate anything but fullest sun without looking kind of bad in our area. It's just too cool except in June, July, and August.

Bluegrass also won't look like ugly straw from October through May. Mix in some fescue and even the deeper shade areas will be covered beautifully.

I hate Zoysia grass, looks good in the hottest weather (when it's too hot to out walking in it anyway), then looks like trash for most of the year. I don't mind the burned out looks of "northern grasses" in summer (as I'm normally in a pool anyway). As far as Bermuda grass, it is not universally loved either, even where fully hardy. I like Kentucky Bluegrass.

I'm curious. What are your reasons for wanting bermuda in your location?
