Sooo, we have no need for an actual formal living room in our new house. The door from the garage and front door enters into a formal living room with high ceilings. I was thinking of creating a mudroom/foyer/catch-all in a portion of the living room closest to these doors. Has anyone done this or has seen this done? I couldn’t find anything online for ideas. Is it crazy?

The reason I wanted to do this is functionally our family tends to walk in with all their bags, backpacks, shoes and whatever they took down from the car then drop it wherever they walk in. Since the entry is not near the kitchen or family room, I thought the “formal” living room would be a great spot so none of the junk gets dropped off all over the house.
