what you could think about doing is building up your uppers. Diff ways to do it

basically, build a skeleton base

and attach doors, or doors w/glass

added boxes w/glass doors and light.

OR< get taller uppers, and do a thicker crown

see how they did taller upper cabinets and added a larger width crown? you could easily do this w/yours.

Or, you could also close the gap w/custom type of crown addition

Beth is so right. Yes to extending the height of the cabinets. In the absence of a walk-in pantry, I suspect any additional storage would be greatly appreciated.

Also like the idea of adding the wood boxes atop the cabinets for more storage for seldom used items, especially light weight ones such as some plastic containers -- easily reachable with long BBQ tongs. By putting items less often used above the overhead cabinets, you'll have more room in the rest of the cabinets for things you use regularly.

You could add one of the box shelves over the window, too.

You could add doors with top hinges to them.

You could paint the new boxes above the overhead cabinets the same color as the ceiling so they more visually disappear.
