Do you think Goodness Gracious is smaller at maturity than Afterglow? Going to get one tomorrow. I want the smaller one of the two.

They both get pretty big, but Goodness Gracious got bigger for me.

My "superior growing techniques" have kept some of the really big ones as minis!!!!!! I have a Komodo Dragon for 8 years that never got over 3" tall with only one eye.

I never divided it. It just won't grow for me in a pot. Steve, I believe, is being factious, when he says his hosta remains small no matter what he tries. He posted that too much fert and tree roots sucking up all the goodies, so the hosta wouldn't grow. It is not a technique, but a situation.

Get smaller hostas if that is what you want. It can take 3-5 YEARS for a hosta to be mature, and growing conditions can change all that.

It might be a good idea to join a local hosta society in your area. (Canada) Then you can get better info on what you can expect in your latitude/longitude and soil.

What grows well and reaches a max size in North Carolina, is different from that same hosta in Michigan, or in B.C.

They are not that difficult to dig up and move or divide. As a gardener, you know that NOTHING is permanent....well perhaps that oak tree. Hostas grown in the same place for many years get fairy ring and the center dies out. Just as other perennials do. When they get too big, get out the shovel and share them with your neighbors.
