Catching up on Thursday

It seems all I do is catch up. I didn't spend the morning in the garden today and didn't get many pictures. The peach truck was in town so I had to make a pick-up and then to the grocery. Here are the few I got at lunch and some from yesterday.

I like Heavenly Be My Valentine.

Red Lobster is a southern-bred daylilies that we picked up cheap. It came through last winter just fine, but it was a mild one, so we'll see what happens this winter.

Kerfuffle was new this spring. It's a small uf reverse bitone. I think I really am liking this one.

Colorful Chaos Nelli is a rather coarse flower, but it's a monster of a plant.

Evermore Greatful is one of Richard Norris's tets. It's got the look of his flat-faced diploids.

I bet you can guess who selected Mardi Gras Indian. That's right--it was Bob. It is really intense in color.

I was delighted by this small flower--first time open in the garden. This is Rosy Wren.

We grew Spell Fire years ago and then got rid of it as we switched to mostly tets. Now our interest in dips is back again so we purchased it again. It's funny how your interests will change over time.

Odontos is another of our Canadian daylilies. This one is from Daniel Matton.

I don't know if Titanic is going to be a keeper. It's been here several years and is not increasing much.

I am trying to get a few more clump shots, but I have to be more careful to get all the dead flowers out of the picture. This is Sihir from Canadian hybridizer Daniel Matton.

Here are a few seedlings that interest us. This one is Jewel of Jewels X Dr Jules Michael Vinkman. It looks a lot like Dr. Jules, but the eye is much bigger. We aren't sure this one has enough buds.

This one has a rather strange color. It is Apache War Dance X Spacecoast Brazen Bandit. It has a plant habit like Apache War Dance, which is a great grower here.

This is Whiskered Tree Swift X (Interview with a Vampire X Crimson Stories).

Here is the Queen of the seedlings today. Unfortunately a bug took a bite out of it. This is Miracles Have Messages X Call off the Search. I am actually surprised at the edge on this one.

This is the seedling Princess. This is Spacecoast Color Scheme X Rosemary Mussar. The flower is about 4 inches across. I really like this one. It's got a lot going on--some sculpting, bitone, ruffles and some gold edge.

My favorite seedling today is Apache Wardance x. I like the color and purple edge. Heavenly be my Valentine is a real eyecatcher, it’s gotta be a Gossard.

I really like Heavenly Be My Valentine. Jewel of Jewels X Dr Jules Michael Vinkman and Whiskered Tree Swift X (Interview with a Vampire X Crimson Stories) are both quite pretty too, Nancy. Youe Queen of the seedlings is lovely.

You have lots of promising seedlings. I'd hate to have to be the one to decide what the keepers will be. Do you just pile up the "others" you are no longer keeping in the composter?..............Maryl

The Daniel Matton intros are always quite interesting. Lots of teeth going on! You almost need sunglasses looking at Mardi Gras Indian on the computer screen-it must be a sizzler in person!! I like all the seedlings but that Apache War Dance has a unique color. And I don't think I want to read the answer to Maryl's questions about the unwanted seedlings!!!

My favorite today is Whiskered Tree Swift X (Interview with a Vampire X Crimson Stories). I like its colors and edge. The seedling queen has a very nice edge too!

I like the Whiskered Tree Swift seedling as a change from the orange red toothies. But Sihir definitely grabs your attention.

Well, Maryl asked so here is what we do with all the seedlings. I am sure it will make some of you cringe.

Seedlings generally stay in the ground for 3 years, even the dogs. It's just too much work and too much damage to the others to dig them out. At the end of three years, the selects are dug out and put in their own bed with more room to grow. Then we mow the bed off and plow the others under.

The selects stay in what we call the 'observation bed' for at least one year, but more likely two or three. As they prove themselves worthy, they are moved to the sales bed and are earmarked for introductions. When they prove themselves unworthy, they are dug out and thrown on the compost pile. We even have some that overwintered there and are blooming now.

I know it seems harsh, but we just don't have the time to catalog each non-selected seedling and try to find a home for it. Besides, there are plenty of registered daylilies to be had at reasonable prices from us and many other sellers.

Besides, the nutrients from our soil went into growing those seedlings and when we plow them under or apply the compost, we are putting those nutrients back into the soil.

We got over treating the seedlings as precious babies years ago. Today's seedling queen may be tomorrow's dinner for a vole. We can't get that attached to them.

Gasp! Nancy, how could you do that to them! Just kidding, although at one time not long ago I would have felt that way. You just can't keep every baby. I got pretty harsh this year, at least for me. You have so many beautiful daylilies today. Love Heavenly Be My Valentine is my favorite, but I really like Evermore Grateful, Odontos, and that clump of Sahir. Your seedling queen and princess are gorgeous!
