Cardboard Palm Questions

Yesterday my husband brought these 2 cardboard palms home. They need to get planted ASAP. If I put in ground could they would go where pictured? SW exposure. Full on summer sun from about noon till 5. I’m northeast Florida coastal. Zone 9a. That bed is 42” deep.

Would they do okay in a large planter? That would be my preference.

Does anyone have any comments good or bad about this cycad? I think they are similar in habit to the sago palms.

Is there anything special that should be done to the roots before planting? These apparently were pups that a someone dug up and put them in pots to be transplanted. Not much dirt was added. Then they were forgotten about. I hope they can be saved. Preferably in a large rectangular cedar planter box.

Nice looking plants for Florida. They will get too big for the bed you have them pictured in, particularly when they grow over the walkway if that might be a problem. Great plant. Not so nice to rub against on bare ankles and naked toes. I would be leery of that sun exposure and would have to read up on them before commenting.

Growth habit is pretty much identical to sago palms. Cardboard Plant is much smaller and less prickly. They would definitely work as a long term container plant.

We have them all over here as landscape plants. They're in many public areas. The park where I work has beds of them in full sun and partial shade.

My first thought same as Christopher's ... that they will get too large for the small bed. They'll be on the walk and jammed onto the house.

I have one thriving in morning and afternoon sun...but your space is way to small they get rather large. Mine was your size 4 years ago, now it is about 3" x4"...

Thanks everyone. I was afraid they would get too big for this spot. Maybe I’ll just keep one and find a different spot for it. I do like how they look.

They grow into quite large clumps. Cute, like puppies, when small but start to become something different as they age. Think of a spot that would suit a large clump. In time that's what it will be.
