Flowering quince, Chaenomeles ?

That was my first thought but the quince I’ve seen have larger fruit than golf ball size? Maybe some are that small? I’ve asked him if it has thorns, waiting to hear back.

You can see two thorns in the foreground, where it passes in front of the middle hydrangea leaf, and again on the right side of the second picture (pointing downward, look under the yellowish blurry leaf). Our flowering quince usually produces fruit the size of a small plum, so deformed golfball sounds about right. Cydonia, the quince known for its fruit, will produce something more the size of an apple or pear, though there may also be Chaenomeles with larger fruit, too.

Both the thorns and the foliage of Chaenomeles are visible in both pictures. The fruit is also unmistakably Chaenomeles.
