Help decorate a blank wall!

I need help with finishing my living room. I have an blank wall and have no clue what to do with it. Should I add another piece of wall art? And, if yes, what kind so it complements but doesn't compete with the existing piece above the sofa?

BTW, I'm not totally happy with the drapes and club chairs being the same beige/taupe colour. They are different textures, but not changing either piece at present time...

Also, we eventually will change our stairs spindles to simple wrought-iron. I included the entire area so you can get a better sense of the space.

I've been stuck on this blank wall for what feels like forever and am hopeful to get some ideas :)

    Such a beautiful, elegant home!

I think I might look for something to fall in love with that's long and narrow -- two pieces that would complement one another nicely. I would probably go with something in grayscale or sepia, so as not to compete with the colorful painting. Not the best mockup, but maybe this will give you an idea of what I mean:

Thanks IdaClaire, I was thinking of art, but it's so hard to find something that's nice and fits my budget ;)

You have art on the one wall I would recommend something 3 dimensional that complements the art and seating. Be creative and think outside the BOX!!

you have a lovely space. another possible idea is to put your large piece of art on that empty wall and then get a sofa table to put behind the sofa and then on the sofa table add a dramatic tall floral arrangement one one side and a lamp on the other side.

IMO the blue rug is really pulling this lovely area down visually. I'm not sure I found the exact correct rug, but the room needs something visual to connect the chairs to the sofa

Also, your layout for this room is likely the one that everyone would reach for, but it looks like you have an unusual home, and perhaps a less predictable arrangement might have suited the room. Here is an alternate layout that adds a highback chair for the host.

Thanks Beverly! Your mock ups are fantastic. I played around with the layout a lot when I was starting this room. Unfortunately, the small sofa I have is still too wide to rest near the window...it would basically be tucked into the corner and meet the window frame.

As for the rug, I like your suggestions but the reason I chose the teal/turquoise rug is because the living room is open to the dining room and my dining chairs are a tealish blue velvet. I was trying to connect the rooms together.

I really like your mock up of the small 6 frames and small floor lamp. It fills the space nicely.

Beverly, I have to say I do love the neutral zebra rug....does it come in 6 x9?!

Large art in a set of four to really fill that wall and then compliment rug and art with jewel toned cushions. This will create a visually impactful room that makes a creative statement as you enter your home especially and will connect nicely with dining room. See example below of an impactful room using large art and vibrant colors.

MGD. All the rugs are from RugsUSA.com. I do think that rug is available in 6x9. The rug is sold by a number of sources. Lots of good sales now

Thank you Beverly. I just realized that in the photos I posted the chairs and sofa look like they are different colours. All the seating is a velvety light beige. The chairs look kind of pinkish on my screen, they are not in person. If I don't change the rug, do you think I should change the accent pillows to connect the seating together more?

I'd add a piece of tallish furniture there...a bookcase or display case...a small secretary, etc. Nothing too large, small scale for the space, but not short.

Good suggestion from Oly. That would look really nice.

NO NO NO to pale rug!! Your room/rug is lovely as is!! A pale rug washes the room out!! I too thought floating shelves of some sort. It would add the three dimensional aspect suggested above but not tighten/clutter up the floor space of a cabinet. My only query is lamps. You have no light once the sun goes down? BTW LOVE the blue I can see peaking from your dining room chairs!! They are very bold--soo KEWL!!

I like the idea of adding tall furniture near the blank wall but I don't have room. The space is very small...that's a 6x9 rug and the coffee table is 43" wide.

Lovely home. I too think the couch looks crammed into the space as it’s right up against the wall to make room for the big coffee table. Pull the couch forward three or four inches and get a smaller, rectangular table. In the picture the rug looks startlingly blue but I think in real life it looks fine.
