I imagine it is like in the north where it is best to avoid evergreens unless you know from someone else that a particular evergreen will grow well. I am far enough north that I learned to avoid evergreens, but I have some evergreens that are among the best I grow. Maybe buy from southern sellers, if they are growing particular dormants they probably will do well for you.

Thank you. So far the only one I have ordered from is Oakes in Tennessee and they seem to do very well.

The issue with dormants in the south is they want to have a sleep period, but the warm temperatures make that difficult. I know some growers in Florida have trouble with some dormants, but I haven't heart of many issues in Louisiana. Do your daylilies keep growing all year or do they die to the ground in the winter?

Another thing you could do is check the foliage type of the ones you grow successfully. You can check for that in the American Daylily Society database. If you are already growing dormants in your garden, then you are probably ok.

Since you mention buying plants from Oakes, I know for a fact that they have trouble with evergreens in their climate. So many of theirs are semi-evergreen or dormants. So if Oakes daylilies do well, I would guess you would not have to worry. In fact, you might be in the enviable position of being able to grow all three types well.

I have some that do die to the ground in the winter. But they usually come back ok.

Dormant do fine here and I live in Central Alabama. They die to the roun, and that is just fine with me since it makes clean up easier, but actually, pretty much all of them die to the ground, take a short nap and then bounce right back up.
