Ficus Triangularis

Help! I purchased a beautiful Ficus Triangularis a week ago. When I purchased it, it had yellow leaves due to lack of water. I brought it home and soak watered it. It continued to turn yellow! I want to water it again but don't want to cause root rot! The pictures are after I pulled all the yellow leaves.

    F triangularis and deltoidea (mistletoe fig) look very much alike, but the leaf midvein of triangularis runs the full length of the leaf, which confirms your tree as triangularis. It's much more likely the chlorotic foliage was from over-watering than under-watering because neither triangularis nor deltoidea tolerate wet feet well. In fact, I have deltoidea and it's the only plant I grow in gritty mix that I really can't water on a schedule. I need to know the plant is almost dry before I can water, or else I'll have shedding and chlorosis to deal with.

    So, if you're going to leave it in that big pot, you'll need to use a 'tell' to determine what moisture levels are deep in the pot if you want to keep it happy. You definitely will not be able to rely on your finger to tell you when it's time to water. In fact, the finger thing is almost always harmful advice unless the pot is 5" deep or less. Other than liking it on the dry side, cultural wants are pretty much the same as the rest of the genus. Warm, sunny, avoid wet feet, fertilize regularly during periods of robust growth.

    BTW - it doesn't have to be grown as a vine with a number of runners. The trunk will thicken and you can grow it as in tree form.

    "Moving a plant stresses it" is a horticultural myth - moving it to less favorable cultural conditions is what causes stress. Moving it to more favorable conditions causes a positive response.

    Whether or not the plant will tolerate full sun depends on what light level it's acclimated to currently. Genetically, the plant is capable of tolerating full sun once acclimated.

    Repotting is a stress, but it's a short-lived stress, unlike root congestion which is forever, or at least until a pair of hands actually gets into the middle of the root mass to correct the congestion and roots with potential to become problems.
