What are the adjacent rooms?

behind the drawn island is the dining room and on the other is the family room. The small entry you see at the bottom is a entry hallway

Either way, you can’t have an island as bit as you want without knocking down some walls - everywhere I’ve drawn an arrow you need a minimum of 42 inches gap between island and perimeter cabinets or corners of adjacent room walls:

Thank you Sharon, this is what I meant by the family room and dining room. The contractor told us the minimum space is 36” between cabinets and island. and yeah I figured the drawing of the island was too big! Lol i agree we need a smaller one. But in regards to the kitchen cabinets/appliances layout, what would you recommend?

36” clearance is very tight and I don’t recommend. Is there any existing plumbing (most important is drainage)? Will the contractor have easy access to the floor below (eg: is there an unfinished basement where he can tie into drains if necessary?

Couple more questions - is there existing venting for a range hood? Can venting go anywhere through the ceiling? Where’s the closest exterior wall?

We ned more info and is there a wall between the itchen and DR or is that whole area open , asking becuase where you have the stools you need 60” from edge of counter to allow for stools and your contractor should not be designing your kitchen and 42” is IMO the mon. ealk space anywhere and in front of the stove and fridge 48”. If you want ral help here we need to the whole floor plan of the house , if there are stairs show them and the secong storey .It looks like you have 2 DRs , get to work and post a proper floor plan to scale .

HU: have you been to a kitchen showroom yet? If not, it might be a good place to start - they usually have qualified designers on staff who can help with your layout.

Regarding aisle widths...Aisle widths are measured to/from the items that stick out into the aisle the farthest. They are not measured cabinet-to-cabinet.

Counters overhang cabinet boxes by 1.5". Most contractors do not understand this. If there's an appliance or deeper wall/cabinet on the aisle, then you measure from that item on that side.

E.g.,

• Cabinet-depth refrigerators are really around 30" deep when accounting for the doors (the "cabinet-depth" term only applies to the refrigerator box/carcass and does not include doors & handles)
• Ranges and ovens usually stick out 27" to 29"

Regarding minimum aisle widths...From the NKBA info that Mama Goose posted above:

• For a one person (and always a one-person) work aisle, 42" is the minimum width
• For a Kitchen with more than one person working an an aisle, 48" is the minimum width
• For a walkway with no work space, appliances, cabinetry, or seats 36" is the minimum
• For seating with no work space, appliances, or cabinetry behind the seats, 44" is the minimum. (If it's a dead-end, i.e., against the wall on one end so no outlet or through-traffic possible, 36" to squeeze by.)
• For seating that does have one or more of work space, appliances, or cabinetry behind the seats, 54" or more, depending on how much traffic is also passing through.
• Between a table and island/peninsula with seating, a minimum of 60"
