DO you mean register covers?

I work at a flooring company and we like them! They are well made and you save money in custom staining wood vents.

They look like they'd obstruct airflow. If in a floor, there are wood grills available that have adequate openings and can be finished to match the floor so as to be less visible.

A register is most importantly an item of function, not a an item of decoration. Some look better than others but a register is a register - when you see one, you know what it is and why. They need to be open and unobstructed by furniture or other items.

I’ve had them for a couple of years now. The floor installer said you get even better air flow and I agree. They not only look sleek and modern but airflow is better than before installation. I highly recommend.

Airflow in HVAC is measured in CFMs, cubic feet per minute. It's a volume of air. How much air is released in a room depends mostly on the size (capacity) of the duct, the pressure of the air, and whether or not the grill at the end obstructs air movement. Most grills don't.

Throughput is also lost from friction of the moving air as it passes in contact with duct walls - flex duct has more friction, hard metal duct has less. Turns provide more friction, straight runs have less.

So if the air travelling down the duct has been moving along at a given volume per minute (CFM) after leaving the air handler, furnace, or plenum, say that's 150 CFM, and then encounters whatever kind of grill at the end that provides minimal resistance, how could it be that there's more airflow with one kind of grill than with another? In either case, wouldn't it be the same 150 CFM?

I put these in my house. Had to throw all 16 away and replace. They do not flow well at all. I had looked at the air flow reports they publish and thought they would be fine but should have looked a lot closer. The face velocity on their reports is massive. Much higher than most others manufactures use. If you looks the scale goes from 800 to 2600. No residential home has 2600 face velocity. That’s absurd. Other manufacturers report on a scale from 300-1000. That said comparing the 10x4 vent at 800 you can see the cfm is only 45 where a Hart and Cooley vent would be at 160 cfm. That’s about 72% less airflow!! Looked great but I would have needed massive vents to heat my home with them efficiently.

We built a modern home and aria vents were encouraged in our main living space. We love the look but when the HVAC system comes on it is LOUD. Can anyone else comment? We are trying to determine if it’s the vent or the HVAC system…
