I agree with Darzy...a round table would be ideal for the space and optimize your traffic flow.

You could leave it centered and rotate it about 30 degrees and it would not have such a square look and might help the traffic flow.

I like the idea of a round table, but the room is only 8 feet wide, so a typical 36' wide table hits the breakfast bar counter top! :(

Definitely off to the left...I would add a tufted bench on wall for seating & consider a new rectangle shaped table. Hire an electrician to center light fixture over new table location. Add your existing chairs and some pillows on your new bench. This will open up your space while adding better flow.

I've thought about doing a bench, or even a corner banquet but not sure how practical that is with small kids at home. I love the idea though. I'm wanting a new table, but can't decide yet. I'm still sourcing a new light fixture for the space, but thankfully my hubby and I do all the handy work around here! Any table suggestions or experience with benches ?

I purchased a tufted long bench/ottoman in black which I
used in front of a window. I placed a simple painted wood dining table in front of it and added two of my existing dining chairs opposite the bench and then one dining chair at each end. So I created seating for 6 and my 3 kids would fight to sit two together on the back bench. I would suggest World Market or Pier 1 for interesting wood tables and tufted ottomans can be found at TJMaxx or Home Goods. I used a pair of slip covered pillows and table runner both which could be tossed in the laundry as needed.

Huh? A 3 ft. table should leave you 2 1/2 feet on either side. How big is the table you have now?

I could see a pendant style light fixture with a modern drum shade. You may also try to update your kitchen stools to coordinate with your new table design as well. Good luck!

I agree with 'joyannello' my thoughts exactly :) Bench will use less room and don't need space to pull out chairs. A rectangle table should work real well.

@ groveraxle, I'm sorry I wasn't clear, the room is 8 feet wide, but the breakfast bar counter top sticks out pretty far into the room, so the backs of chairs constantly hit it (we had a round table prior to this one). We regularly need seating 6+, so having a small table isn't an option. Thanks for catching my poor wording!

@joyannello, this might be the final push I needed! I wanted to do a bench or banquet built in, but felt like it was going to get ruined by the kids. Now I'm ready to really explore that option! I appreciate your help!

Glad I could help...as I mentioned there is no need to commit to an actual built in bench. Just find a practical two seater ottoman in a child friendly fabric and style it up with pillows. I think your only other concern would be finding a basic table that your current chairs can fit under well to give you seating for 6. Most electricians can move a light fixture in about an hour and patching the old opening is an easy DIY project...plus it forces you to repaint/freshen up existing ceiling. Best of luck!
