I use commercial potting soil amended with additional perlite. I put the ones that are most important to me under the carport close the house in November. The ones that are less precious I put right up next to the house on the southeast side. In your climate, potted daylilies would probably fare better in a garage.

I use potting mix and leave them outside unless there is a hard freeze coming and if so, I put he in the greenhouse for the duration of it then back outside. I have used the soil and perlite mix, but mine do just as well in the potting mix and I am usually only going to keep them in the pot until spring.

Since I have some plants in pots, I usually use garden soil like Miracle Grow or the Lowes brand and use fairly large pots. I usually sink the pots in my raised vegetable garden and then cover them with leaves. I have also heard where people surrond the pots with bagged leaves and throw a layer of leaves over the pots. I haven't tried that method yet, but what I will say is that I have thrown some seedlings bare root behind my compost bin and they continue grow year after year. If they were something of value, they would probably die. There you have it, my two cents worth. Hopefully when and if you move, it will be to a warmer climate.

Julia, that is always the way. The one you are throwing away refuses to die and the one you mulch and protect (and spent a lot of money on) dies. We just rescued one out of the compost pile because it was putting out very toothy flowers. We have no idea what the cross is.

Thanks all for the input. I've got several pots that are large plus I have large bags of Garden Soil and Potting Mix that I bought last year but never used them.
