Large Kitchen Floor Plan Help

Hello. I am currently working on a floor plan and the space has naturally developed to where my kitchen footprint is what I would consider quite large (19' x 10.5'). It's in a configuration I would call a "broken U-shaped", but it could also be considered an L-shaped kitchen with an island and separate pantry area.

A hallway bisects the fridge/pantry leading to a separately heated sunroom and informal dining area. The other side of the walkthrough has the L kitchen and island. I have been playing with the work area efficiency (fridge/oven/sink triangle) and several articles suggest that the leg between each station should not be more than 4 to 9-ft each, with the sum of all sides less than 23-ft (ideally 13 to 19). Based on these numbers, my original design has people walking 15-ft alone just from the fridge to the sink ... looking for help with my station layout and efficiency please!!

What I love about the current design is the large curved window by the sink -- and for that reason alone I'm hesitant to move the sink and lose this layout. I also can't move the pantry as it accesses a large hidden pantry. And as the fridge is recessed, it ideally fits along this bottom wall as well. Note that the exterior walls are thicker as they are all ICF. And there is a ledge detail behind the base cabinets along that exterior wall for plumbing and easy power. As the island is also fairly large, I opted for a raised eating/snack bar to help define the space separate as from the living room. There are also minimal upper cabinets in the design (only 4-ft along the window wall and 3-ft of uppers between the fridge and pantry).

The only solution I have to my dilemma is to add a second sink. I wasn't even aware of this option till reading through these archives and online articles, but it seems fairly common today. Am willing to go this route if the plan works well. So the goal of the second sink would be to have two work areas (a 21" washing corner apron sink by window/stove/dishwasher and 33" (single bowl?) prep sink on island/stove/fridge) ... this shortened the efficiency triangle, but it still feels wrong. I also had to shorten the side window looking into the sunroom to 2-ft so as keep the stove 20" away per most codes (number based on internet research).

A third throw-away option I tried was to move the back wall inwards towards the house, but that only lessened the distance from the fridge to sink to 13-ft. And it loses my an ideal wet bar set up in the basement and balcony option on the floor above. Including this as I have considered it, just don't want to move that wall any.

I am also not a fan of having a stove on the island, so that option is out. My decisions seem to have limited my options and I see no other alternatives to improve this space.

So what do you think ...

One sink, two sink? No window into sunroom? Any suggested improvements to increase the floor plan or space efficiency?

Thanks for the input and advice in advance!

Thanks for the clarification on the pantry! All my research and design ideas were from internet searches which I either misunderstood or were inaccurate.

I didn't realize I had that many clearances wrong either. Though the work aisle was 4', so perhaps some of that can be used to increase the spacing behind the island seating.

I like all your sample images too with all the microwaves nearby the fridge.

    Appreciate the input!

EDIT: I see what you mean about the second work aisle being 42" as well. I kind of discounted that as only walk through space originally.

Oops, you're correct--the 4' is sufficient, and correct again--I took some of that space for the traffic aisle behind seating. I also adjusted the pantry door to 30" from 24". Here's a link to the NKBA guidelines, if you'd like to read up on kitchen rules: NKBA guidelines/illustrated

Awesome, those guidelines are definitely more authoritative and I'm sure far more accurate than the general articles I've been reading so far. Many thanks!

I updated the design based on your helpful suggestions! The living room didn't even need to be re-sized as I did originally label the marked dimension behind the stools as from the rear, so moving the island inwards in width allowed for the extra walk space needed.

I kept the curve in the seating side of the island too. I'm not quite sure I exactly want it yet, but it does seem to fit well.

Thanks again for helping guide my direction. And though it pushes the fridge back out, I'm now considering whether I should switch the microwave to the inside and add a wall-mounted oven here as well ... a 33" width model would fit perfectly inside the 36" available cabinet space this creates with the wider pantry door opening. The fridge would be 11-ft away as drawn, versus 10-ft as your original suggestion recommends.

Would you recommend against that as the island interrupts direct access to the fridge?

IIRC, an island (or other corner) isn't supposed to intersect one of the lines of the triangle by more than 12", so I'd put the fridge closer to the range. I also liked the deeper counter beside the fridge, but if you put an oven beside it then having the deeper space won't matter.

I think I agree with that deeper space now that you point out it'd be there. Will move the fridge over too as . Thanks again!

Nice thing about the deeper counter (other than extra counter space) is that MWs are usually deeper than standard uppers, so it works for that, too. But, if you decide to include a wall oven, you could use a MW drawer on the corner of the island, facing the fridge. Good luck with your kitchen--I hope you'll keep us updated.
