as i recently stated... everything i ever bleached.. died.. probably because they were too far gone by the time i tried such ... so i dont have any direct info ...

What about Bayer Advanced?

I swished them, bare root, in a bucket then let them sit for 10 min. Then I swished them around in a bucket of clear water, and let them air dry slightly before repotting. Worked for most of them.

I remember Bruce. I had asked him a few questions about hosta rot and bleaching. This is the note I made in regards to bleaching:

When dividing, Bruce says:

soak in 10% ammonia for 15 to 20 minutes.

No need to rinse off bleach - I do let mine air dry for a couple of hours before replanting: washing/soaking and drying may stimulate them to perform better once back in the ground.

I figured with Bacterial Soft Rot it was kill or cure, so I was ruthless. 20% bleach for an hour- 45 minutes on the roots and 15 on the leaves, because there wasn't a pot big enough to do the whole plant. Washed all the dirt off first, repotted in potting soil without washing off the bleach. Had to leave it in full shade or the leaves would have burned. Journey's End has new leaves, smaller but it's growing. I also treated everything with Phyton 35 spray and drenched plants that were infected. While I was waiting for the Phyton to arrive I mixed up a spray bottle of 10 % bleach and sprayed the infected plants every 3 days. That burned the leaves, didn't hurt the petioles. No idea if it's worked. The instructions say repeat every 7 days.

Thanks for the fighting nematodes link, Babka. I bought two plants from a vendor at the Dubuque convention. Tiny Bubbles was loaded with nematodes and infected everything around it. Lakeside Downsized developed HVX this year. Glad I only bought two!

When I had this last time, the county agent said there was no effective control for it. I emailed last week to ask it anything new had come on the market since 4 years ago. He said no. So, I assume that bleach is my last option.

Well, I did it. I bleached the Regal Splendor and Fluted Fountain. (And the pots, in case I didn't do that last time.) I washed out all the rot that I could get to and then bleached the roots (for 10 minutes) and a little bit up on the petioles, rinsed, dried and re-potted. It was clearly some kind of root rot, presumably rhizoctonia.

At this point, they need all the help they can get. Any reason not to use a root stimulator? I have 3 to 4 more months before they go dormant.

My other "problem children" don't have root rot. The roots are fine on Anne, but she was getting ugly. I have more work to do on those.

I think I recall Bruce said to air dry the hosta for a couple of hours before planting? I would think the rooting hormone (with fungicide) would be helpful.
