Try Restore A Finish and see if it works for you. It does an amazing job on my 20 year old cherry cabinets.

@redesign, that was the first thing I tried and thought what a great cheap solution. Sadly it made everything look worse! :-( I am wondering if I can give them a light sanding (it is a veneer) and then shellac them?? Or are you only suppose to oil maple?

Maple takes paint very well if you want to go that route.

@Design Girl, that is what I am thinking but then I think that would only make sense if I did EVERYTHING in the house, sigh. I am befuddled because I need to do something but actually kind of like the maple... at least the doors, which are in good shape.

I don't think you need to change everything. What about people who have wooden cabinets with painted trim. Many people have painted trim with maple/cherry cabinets. You can certainly paint the cabinets without all the trim. You can even paint the trim and leave the doors. It's all ok and done frequently. What are your floors?

If wanting to keep the maple, you could look into having new doors and drawer fronts made.

Darn! I had hoped that product would work for you the way it had for me. Perhaps a professional cabinet refinished is the way to go if you want to keep the maple.

I am actually less worried about the cabinets than I am about the windows. I had originally thought I could just paint the cabinets a dark grey and restore the maple on the windows, but I think they may be beyond help, which again, leads me to having to do everything. I suppose I should look at some pictures of white trim with maple doors and see if I can convince myself this looks okay.
