Tiny, dark bathroom help?

We are looking to update our tiny half bath that right now isn't really getting any use, mainly because it really needs some help. We have lived in this home for just over a year and have been picking off projects, and are onto this one. It has a couple things going for it that make it kind of challenging. 1 - it is small - close to 4x4 (with a radiator underfoot). 2 - it is dark, as its only window is this large stained glass piece that doesn't let a ton of light in. 3 - the light salmon wall tile, which, while it appears to be in good shape (except behind the vanity), it + the colors in the stained glass make complementary paint decisions difficult. 4 - the flooring is one fluid piece that was laid in the entryway through the bathroom and into the kitchen, so I am not entirely sure the ease with which I can remove just this piece. We are not planning on being in this house super long-term, so I would rather do a refresh in here vs a remodel, if I could.

We did a desperation paint job when we moved in with this kind of terracotta color, as the walls and ceiling were covered in matching old, flowered wallpaper (matched the skirt on the sink) and we needed the painters to remove it on a quick timeline, but were at a loss with what color to paint to replace. So this color needs to go. We don't know what to replace it with? We've thought about leaving the tile as-is and doing something more complementary, we have thought about painting the tile white and then doing a darker blue color on the walls. Is painting the tile a mistake? We really want to modernize the space - we have been trying to thoughtfully modernize the rooms in the home without destroying overall character. For reference, this is a 90ish year old tudor style home. With a lot of tile.

The vanity is old and falling apart so we will be replacing that. It is very small and seems like needs to be custom sized. I am looking for a more modern looking wooden vanity, but nothing that is going to clash with the stained glass. I've narrowed it down to a couple options. My first thought was just doing a vessel sink with exposed plumbing, but there is no storage in the room aside from the vanity (unless we add something above the door). Because the space is so small, would a vessel sink be the way to go, though? It does seem like they had some issues with the tile behind the vanity, as a bunch are missing, so we would have to replace those somehow if that was the way we went.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you so much!

This bathroom is small enough that I'm not sure it actually meets modern code (e.g., 24" of clearance in front of toilet bowl), so don't change anything big. I'd take down all the tile, if possible and just put tile on the floor (and drywall on the walls). Then a new sink -- maybe a modern wall-hugger rather than trying to squeeze in a vanity -- and paint everything light and bright, with lots of good lights too. I'd follow the stained glass for accents, say gold and pale pink, but really if you can find some art that you like, that's a better guide too.

I'd keep the floor tile since that runs throughout the other spaces. Just remove the wall tile and replace it with drywall that can be painted white, which will brighten the room and look great with the nice window molding. Update your lighting, and get a small vanity or pedestal sink that fits. You can use something simple, but don't go so modern that it doesn't fit with the rest of the house.

IMO gut it to the 2x4 s and start over . Those floor tiles are what will drive every choice you\make unless they are gone . Gut this change all those floors that match and then choose light and bright for everything. IMO a 90s tudoe wanna be house can be what ever you want inside sine honestly was not something to respect .Think about what you would like to see if you were buying this house right now.

Patricia Colwell Consulting it is a 90 year old house, not a 1990s!

Jackie D, you have some great suggestions so far. Love the super small sinkes.

If you're up to it, removing the wall tile from the 50s or 60s would help a lot. Also new bright lighting. Get a new toilet while your at it. Measure first to make sure it will fit, but that toilet looks ancient.

See if a product like TSP or something else would clean up the floor tiles.

I love that window. So charming. To be budget careful, I found some items that will transform, be kind of fun but functional. I need photos of sink wall and measurements but look at this mock up as “concepts” you can find pieces you like. Key element wallpaper that is wild and incorporates all colors. A rug that draws eye from tile would be bonus. I was looking for a gold metal over toilet space saver but ran out of time. I wouldn’t touch tile if it can be avoided. In old houses, one thing leads to another. So be careful.

Thanks so much for all this feedback, this is great inspiration and great jumping off points. I have had some similar thoughts but fleeting and not all together like this.

@houssaon I totally agree on the toilet, it is tiny and old. I looked into it and it seems like it is a tankless flushometer, so I think there would be some extra work on my end to replace. Definitely worth looking into though.

@acm Thank you, clearance and code did not even cross my mind. So helpful to know.

Off to research these inspiration images. Thanks so much. I'll update when we move forward with something!
