My living room needs help!

We moved into our little rancher on acreage almost a year ago, and I still haven't gotten our living/family room together. I think I'm worried I'll make mistakes and I'm a little afraid to get started. This is the first room you see when entering the house, and it doesn't make a great first impression! I have to work with the current furniture, although I can afford accessories such as artwork, maybe end tables, and such, and this is our tv room, so it needs to be lay around friendly!

Ideas?

Thanks so much! (tv on low console off to the left, barely shows up in pic)

The rug is too small. Notice in this photo how the rug meets the t v, fireplace and sofa.

    Add window treatments.

Pull the sofa away from the wall.

Agree, my rug is too small.... not sure if I should stick with the same colors of my current rug or not?

Room needs a more conversational furniture layout. Could the TV be mounted over the fireplace? Agree that rug is too small and couch should be pulled off the wall. Looks like window has verticle blinds. Try something softer.

Definitely add some color--you could add color in a larger rug and in curtain panels. Something decorative over the sofa would warm up the room. It's very gray--that's why it doesn't give a great first impression. See the photo that Judy posted--the walls are a neutral gray but there are accents of color in the small chair, the pillows, the rug, curtains and even the glass bowl on the end table. Very warm and inviting.

You could also add some organic texture to the room. Bamboo shades, baskets, even a sea grass rug would warm it up.

I know TV watching is what we all do in these rooms but I really can't stand when a room SCREAMS that is what we do..all your furniture is orientated to the TV..when IMHO it should be facing each other for conversation ease. I also had those horrid vertical blinds in every home we ever purchased. I still remember when my MIL put them on her living room windows. I hated them then when they were all the rage and I hate them now BUT they are expensive and they work fabulously. I discovered hiding them behind immovable curtain panels gave the room the final dressing it needed and added the softness and color that is lacking in blinds. DH made me wood valances that hide all the rods.

can you take pics of the wall opposite the sofa and the area opposite the window so we can get overall context of the room, the room seems very beige in general and needs some oomf and that can be done with a new larger rug, some art, side tables and more lighting. those adds will help cozy up the space.

just a few ideas for rugs to get your reaction on what you like. what would you say your style is? traditional? transitional? modern?

I'd say the only one i don't really care for, is the top one. I don't really know what to call my style, I like a lot of things... I don't care for ultra modern or super country style. Maybe an eclectic mix! I'm hoping to keep a deeper pile rug, as it's much more comfy if one wants to sit on the floor. Maybe the rug is a good place to add some color?

Oh my yes, I do despise those vertical blinds!! I forgot to mention those in my original post, they have to go for sure! maybe horizontal blinds with curtain panels over top...I'm stumped on a good color combo though. The picture makes the furniture look kind of grey, but it's acutally brown sofa, cream with brown chair, cream with brown rug.
