Not sealing or treating the wood might be a mistake. Although not using for furniture, you are bringing the logs indoors and along with the logs, bringing in all sorts of insects.

i wouldnt bring outdoor wood in either ..

its bad enough when i used to drag wood in for the fireplace ... even if i burned it that evening ...

spiders.. earwigs... etc ... its not that i fear them.. just that they were a pia ...

i guess the real question would be whether the finches would take care of such ... maybe add a woodpecker.. lol ...

I live in California. The logs are located in Alto Sierra area. Hope there are no venomous spiders. Maybe if I let the logs dry outside the bugs might go away?

As long as there is no sap oozing from cuts you should be safe.

I assume you're going to leave branches for the birds to land on?

I would suggest making all the cuts, then let the tree age enough to let the cuts dry over.

Plant safe list for finches.

The pine itself is not a problem, it’s the critters mainly under the bark. I dry pine for two years before burning and there is still a whole ecosystem of critters under the bark.

Yipes! 2 years! Anyway, I passed on the pine as I found some eucalyptus logs closer to my area. They were cut 6 mos ago. I got a lot of branches as well.
