Monarchs in Iowa!

I had cause to drive from SE South Dakota, across the width of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and finally back to SW Michigan yesterday. We got home at 2am. I was amazed and saddened by the number of Monarchs I saw in western Iowa. I swear that my car killed more Monarchs in two hours than I have seen in my gardens in the past three years. I don’t know if these numbers are typical or not. The stretches of highway with the most Monarchs were not where I noticed most, if any, significant stands of milkweed. It was so reassuring to see the large numbers, but so sad to see many dead on the pavement or hitting my windshield. What kind of numbers are others seeing?
