RenovationPLUS Indiana

After visiting the Indianapolis Home Show 2020, we contracted RenovationPLUS, Carmel IN on 4 February 2020 to replace siding, 1 patio door and upper deck, which John Babcock, the owner indicated was a 4-6 week project.  We liked his approach, he had good ideas and product suggestions, which made us feel comfortable and we were excited to have an updated home exterior and welcoming outdoor living space for the summer.

Jumping ahead to our current situation, John Babcock, RenovationPLUS clearly has the ability for design, but has been weak in the execution of our projects. This has been a terrible experience and we are taking steps to recoup the money overpaid for the deck which has still not been installed some 19 weeks from start date. It gives us no satisfaction to write such a negative review of RenovationPLUS,  we only hope by sharing our experience and encouraging you to read other reviews, on this and other social media platforms, that we  can help others.

Work began week starting 24 February. Over the next 4 weeks, some unexpected repairs were made and we were pleased with the quality. Things progressed slowly - we typically had only 2 workers and often only for 1 day a week.  Some days were short due to materials not delivered to the jobsite. The lack of organization in managing materials and labor was becoming clearer, and the crew were showing their frustration. In the meantime two neighbors had similar projects fully completed in a fraction of the time.

By 1 May, 8 weeks in,  about 75% of the siding and the deck ledger board/framing had been installed, however gutters had been off for several weeks causing severe problems with water in the basement and soil erosion during heavy rains.  The remaining siding was installed by RenovationPLUS just before Memorial weekend - 12 weeks into project! During those same few days, painters were sent by John before siding was properly finished. We had installation and caulking/paint going on at the same time. Rushed work is evident with poor fit & exposed fixings on trim boards and painting over wet caulk. There are quality issues with the new siding, some of which were addressed, some we have had to do and others are still outstanding - major issues being poor joints on most window trim; fixing screws exposed or poorly caulked on PVC window and siding trim boards; and soffit vents for the attic not being installed. Overall, RenovationPLUS work is not to the standard  one would expect from a professional installer.

On 11  June, workers came for a half day to complete interior trim work on the patio door. This was  the last time any work has been done by RenovationPLUS. It is now mid July 2020.

Communication was very good during the first month, however, since then we have had to initiate most contact, frequently getting no reply.  This has placed a strain on us and has had a significant effect on our quality of life! John has given many reasons for slow progress - a few were validated by his workers, Covid affected 2 workers, others are merely excuses. Of the crew of 7+  who have worked on our project, none are with John now and he has only 1 worker (currently being trained by John, who himself said "it has been a long time since I picked up the tool belt").  It has become apparent that John can't be relied upon and RenovationPLUS no longer has the skilled resources to complete our project, and to say we are upset and frustrated to be left in this untenable situation is a huge understatement.
