By the way, how DO you manage to get varieties like the white one? That is so unusual for a mg. Wouldn't a huge vine of those be beautiful growing up a porch railing? It would probably be difficult to get that many from seed. And does the seed look like the parent? Do you get and keep seed from all different ones? 🤔😁

I get most of my seeds in trades with other growers. The white one came from a trade with a person who got it in a seed mix. I have seeds from almost all the plants I’ve grown. That’s a problem because I am running out of space and time in my life to grow them all.

Speaking of morning glories, is it possible to grow them in my zone 6b New York and gave them bloom before September? Does anyone start them indoors??

Joseph would know all about that, he grows many indoors. If you want your morning glories to bloom without them getting hit by rost, you should start them very early inside I would think. Joseph would know all the details. Joseph?

Well then I have another question for you, Joseph, can I just tuck MG seeds into houseplant pots and expect them to grow there? I am so happy to discover I can do this with my purple oxalis corms. I’d love to have something else.

I have, outside, but they take so long to germinate here that I didn’t get any blooms until fall so I stopped bothering.

What time of the growing season do you sow the seeds? What name of morning glory are you trying to grow? Sorry for all the questions but the information will help me t help you.

Gerris, thank you! I probably sowed grandpa ott in springtime. It was years ago. So please tell me what kind I should either direct sow or start inside for transplant outside in order to have the earliest bloom. My question about growing indoors would be separate.

I almost never sow seeds directly in the soil. I use the moist paper towel method for starting seeds. Once I see that the seed is germinated I pot it up in a clean yogurt cup size container. Once it has grown out to about four true leaves I transplant to a larger container, say a prayer, and eventually provide a vertical support structure for it to climb.

I am in Zone 7a and can’t plant out Ipomoea nil (such as Scarlett O’Hara) until the first week in June when night temperatures are consistently at or above 65 degrees F. Ipomoea purpurea (such as Grandpa Ott’s) can grow ok at slightly lower night temperatures.

Here is a new one for the winter indoor garden. I enjoyed seeing the bright color and the wide white margin added to the WOWWW moment.

My, that has so much of the lighter area, haven't seen that before that I can recall, very pretty. Before I found GW I didn't realize that there were mg's with variegated leaves. You can imagine my surprise when the first one I planted came out that way. Definitely special. 😁

Can't wait to grow mine outside. I've been feeding the feral cats,and I think they have been taking care of the bunnies that were eating my mg's. Sad, but necessary!!!!
