Pothos Help! How to identify root rot?

Hey! I have my Pothos for over half a year now and I noticed that certain leaves have been turning brown on the edge. I looked at the soil and saw some spots with what looks like tiny white eggs. I did some googling and believe it is fungus. I decided to repot the plant with fresh soil. As I'm not sure how to spot root rot, I took apart the plant and cleaned off / wash off some of the soil. Can someone tell me if there is root rot and how much I should cut off. If I do cut, should I submerge it in water after cutting? I haven't repot it yet and am just letting it sit in a glass of water. I'm also wondering if potting the plant in regular soil (like miracle grow potting mix) is okay? I also don't feed the plant any fertilizer (Please advise if that's recommended). Many thanks!
