Dining Room Size

The current size of our dining room in our custom build is 10.75 x 13.92. We do not have a table but I think we'll probably buy a table that can expand for larger gatherings as needed, so it won't be wall-to-wall lengthwise. We are a family of 3 so we won't need a large table on a regular basis. My dilemma is that I really wanted to put in built in cabinets to frame the opening. If I do 18" cabs, I'm 1" shy of the 3' rule (assuming a 40" table). However, the openings to other rooms are large so we'll have more than 3' typically. Is this an issue? I don't want to make this space too small. I suppose I could do built ins opposite the windows. Just doesn't have the same effect (that's a hallway).
