Bedroom Update: Almost There...

I’ve been working on a downstairs bedroom for DS2 that will also function as a grandchild’s room as the new baby (due November 20th) grows up. I waited almost four months for the bench and bookcases from Pottery barn to arrive. Now that they are in place in the room I’m glad I was patient as the room is almost exactly as I envisioned. it’s an unholy mess in the pictures but I was down there and had my phone so pictures were taken.

This was taken from the door; late afternoon sun in this house is very nice. we decided not to push bookcases to very end of room But center that arrangement on the bed itself. This created a little space at the left end of that wall for us to angle the chair slightly and put the floor lamp behind the chair. In left foreground is the parsons chair on casters that sits at the small black distressed / painted desk.

Desk and chair. I swapped out the blackboard with a collection of antique and vintage silhouettes. The subjects are about evenly divided between adults and children. No framing was changed, it’s all original, including the yellowish wood frames (I need a new shade for the brass ikea lamp, any suggestions?). Open door is walk in closet with an additional built in dehumidifier. A wide blade louvered door is on order for the closet so the unit running in there can pull air from the room with that door closed.

Step back bookshelves separated by a bench. None of the pieces in this Aubrey range have return molding so they all fit nicely side by side on a wall. The screen still needs to be mounted between the two tall cabinets about in the middle of the wall. there. You can see the black stacked ball floor lamp just to the right and behind the club chair, which is upholstered in the same fabric as the bed.

I have straw baskets with a black thread running through them for the bench cubbies and the bottom shelves, and a larger black metal basket with leather handles to sit next to the chair. All baskets on order from Ikea.

Straight on view of desk and silhouettes.

I can see I need to remake the bed! Both sides of the bed have framed book covers of german natural history texts on the wall between nightstands and wall sconces. These were in the basement of our old house.

This room, one other (still too messy to show) and the new bathroom are all on the same hall off the main room in the basement. If we furnished the other room as a sitting room this would be a very nice guest suite.

Thanks for looking at this long winded post !

Beautiful, but where’s the crib? Speaking of baby, I was browsing Crate and Barrel, or maybe CB Kids, last night and It had a wonderful selection of baby quilts. Seriously, great job!

The baby’s parents have a huge bedroom on the other side of this level with a sitting area For DD to have privacy for nursing. The crib will be in with them. This bedroom will be his later on as he comes to visit with his parents. If he comes to visit Kitty and Poppy (our new grandparent name, lol) by himself he has a room upstairs on our floor. I’m just now shopping for a bassinet!

Kswl - You are one fast worker. This is the 2nd house I've watched you complete to a level of detail I could only wish to imitate. Lovely room.

    Looks great Kswl.

I love the silhouettes, are you sure you don’t want the man and woman in the yellowish frames to face each other?

For the lampshade what if you just trimmed it with some red rickrack to bring in the red of the cool bedside sconces. I think they are great.

I love your style, KSWL. This room is very "you." Muted palettes, good mix of patterns, pops of red, a bit of history. Charming but always functional and comfortable. Brava.

" it’s an unholy mess in the pictures"

You crack me up, lady! I'd love that kind of unholy mess! Seriously, you are a woman on a mission and gettin' it all done so beautifully. Again, love the mix of old and new. Such a livable, inviting space.

Local, you are a mind reader......I have narrow width red grosgrain ribbon to trim the bottom edge of the floor lamp’s linen shade, great minds and all that 🤔 The desk lamp shade is a sort of off white that is wrong for the room and it is pleated (read that as “total dust catcher”) so I’m looking to replace it. The red lamps were intended as outside fixtures, operable from a wall switch, but when I saw them —-at HOME DEPOT!— I bought them anyway and Handy Guy replaced the innards with something that could be operated by a little brass switch that he added. The silhouettes.... in our family they always were hung back to back. My brother‘s and mine were hung that way, and my granny had all of her children’s silhouettes hung not facing each other. Have I been missing the Freudian key to our waspy family dynamics all these years???

Finally Home, (love your screen name btw), I have struggled with this room and at times wondered if I would ever pull it together. When we first moved it was a catchall for stuff I had no place else to put.....a.velvet sofa, an antique bed, a beautiful console table, a Botticelli print DH gave me decades ago for our anniversary, and so on. The room looked horrible and it was the room of our DS2 who visits the most and who came back home to help us when DH got so ill, At one point I just started crying about it, but of course I was really crying about the move, the changes, DH’s illness, and the items in the room that represented so many phases of our life together. So I decided to just start with one new thing I really loved and let the room evolve from that. The first thing I ordered was the upholstered bed! I have always wanted one, since the beginning of time itself. And I ordered enough extra fabric to upholster the club chair, then requested no skirt and new black legs for the chair to match the bed’s, and then it just took off from there. It really works nicely with the linen, black and white color scheme of the adjacent bathroom.. That little hissy fit returned dividends!

Thank you Mtn and Fun2b. There was more than a little serendipity at work here!

Thank you Jterrilynn, DLM, Spanish and Joanie, et al!

DLM, I’ve always known that things take about 6 months to become invisible to me. The ugly backsplash burning my eyes with Its ugly as we move in becomes a neutral, non- threatening, not-so-bad-really background element. The bedroom-cum-furniture graveyard becomes a door I never open. I made a list of my non negotiables (a much shorter list than I would have when I was younger) and am trying to focus on those changes. We have lived here almost 8 months but have owned the house for over a year, but—the pandemic, so I’m just squeaking under the wire of my self imposed timeline.

The architectural review committee finally approved our doggy fence and we are on the fencer’s schedule for September 21. That will conclude my initial little list....like Koko’s song from The Mikado, lol.

I’m looking for a coordinating fabric for the bench cushion... hint, hint 😎

It looks great! I especially love the silhouettes!! The bookshelves and the bench together great idea! I agree with the pleated shade comment, I hate them! How would a black shade look?

What about making your bench cushion solid black piped in red?

    User thanked Fun2BHere

That would be great except for our three dogs, who loved cushioned surfaces And seek out any place they can leave hair. However you’ve given me a great idea— black and cream ticking stripe piped in red. That’s what the duvet cover is. I could get Upholstery Guy to make the cushion cover just a tad baggy so I can wash it. I needed a place to repeat that fabric and did not even think of it for the bench!

Kswl, you crack me up with the story of your little ‘hissy fit’. Well-deserved hissy fit, I might add, given the circumstances at the time. I would call it a total meltdown if it were me. You had a vision and the perseverance to see it through as it grew and were unafraid to edit pieces of furniture that were no longer needed. And you know I love the little black desk (wink, wink).

I love your approach to this room and the result is perfection! Love the gallery of silhouettes above the desk and I think localeater's idea about the red trim on the lampshade is a winner. Well done :)

My kind of room. Love the warmth, comfortable feel. So inviting, Kswl, and another beautiful creation of yours. BTW, a neighbor has those same lights in yellow to match the doors on their house and I've been admiring them! Great idea to bring indoors and yay for your Handy Guy. I need him!

Handy Guy is one of my favorite humans. He’s a contractor now but I knew him in his very early days before he was so fancy. He still comes down to help me do Christmas every year, and fits me in around his bigger jobs. Not only that he has become a good friend.

Jlsch, my education and first jobs were in journalism. I worked in radio and newspapers until I became a SAHM. Over the years I have done a lot of volunteer writing as editor of newsletters for PTAs, Junior League, church, Friends of the Library, etc. I also wrote annual reports for smaller charities I volunteered for. I regularly take online writing classes in Oxford’s continuing ed division to continue working with a writing group I met at Oxford when I took summer classes there in 2009. It’s purely avocational; I am writing a history of each of our kid’s lives just for them to have. I was a baby book slacker and this is something unique and more enduring (I hope) than a lock of hair or a hospital bracelet.
