Vintage sofa reupholstery

Hello. I am needing some advice on picking a color for a vintage sofa and chair that I will have reupholstered to go in our front living room. I have gone all over the place on colors and am now just not sure of any of them. I do believe the sofa would benefit from a color instead of my normal neutral cream or white (nothing wrong with these but want something more of a statement with this). I've attached photos of the sofa, the chair and the space they will go in. The rug has cream, grey undertones I think and blue. It can change too though depending on color of sofa. I thought I wanted a lime green/olive color on sofa and have a floral/bird type print on chair but I second guess that. Then I thought maybe a deep blue. I'd really appreciate any advice and suggestions you would kindly offer on all design and decorating areas. Thank you!

Thank you @lynartist for your replies. I completely agree the sofa and chair are very dated the way they look now. But I love the wood on them and believe these can be very extraordinary pieces if done with the right fabric and detail. i agree also about the nailhead trim. Yes to double welting. And I did think about doing a bench seating on the sofa as opposed to 3 cushions but am still undecided on that. I love your suggestion on the chair and having the back cushion with more contour would be great to update it more.
And I agree the room isn't that colorful as is, as I was trying to be more neutral and have the blue and white chinoiserie decor as color and thought the rug would compliment. I want beautiful rooms in my home! And I fail at pulling everything together most of the time.
I've searched so many vintage sofa colors and textures and like you mentioned find that green compliments the wood beautifully! I found this photo of one with the color I love and a couple other fabrics for the chairs that may work as well. what do you think? and what type of rug?

I do like that green and think it would look beautiful with your blue & white vision of your room!

I don’t dislike your rug, it’s actually very nice. It’s just very soft and if you do the sofa in a green that will add some color to the room!

I will start with the sofa and go from there! Thanks again for taking your time to share your thoughts with me!

Good luck and do check back in!

I think you can see that B&W with green is a classic and natural pairing! You really can’t go wrong with this combo!

I love, love these! Thank you!

I too love the emerald tones of green and blue. I am going in that direction myself in our home. I had a olive green sofa years ago and it was a Thomasville wool fabric. The darn thing was indestructible!!! I have it away 20 years later to a neighbor who just moved in next door and had very little. She had it for years after we moved. So, if you like to change colors, paint walls your colors and do sofa off white! Lol. Personal choice of course. Either way it will be beautiful. It just reminded me of that darn olive sofa! Lol

I would do a French blue solid on them and then on the chair do the French blue solid as well but on the outside do a complimentary printed fabric. Add in that green! I know these aren't your sofa and chair style exactly but it is as close as I could get to show you the fabric colors

The fabric on left I couldn't put on the chair but its the Brunschwig and Fils Bird and Thistle.

I would do a fabulous trim on your drapery panels in the inside lead

I would love to see a straight on photo of your navy blue break front.

I have this rug and I think it could very much work in your space

Its a lot of color but its fantastic.

Or something more traditional and subdued

A blue sofa would be gorgeous with that wood trim. I would get all the elements together so you are sure which shade of blue. A deeper navy (in velvet for example) is going to create a different room than a medium blue. The above selections are fabulous, but I would choose the middle blue color for the sofa fabric. If you like your rug, blues are always easy to live with. If you want more drama, a stronger rug will make a big statement, as Designer Interior South showed you. Great lines on that sofa!

sjard11, when you get a chance, can you post better photos of your whole room showing the rest of the furniture and the wall space so we can get a better idea of what we are looking at? Thanks.

Just a comment on the sofa seat..i think for comfort and visually ...the single cushion is better ...and if you go with velvet and less traditional trims it will be perfect...if you are trying for authentic...the three cushions line up with the legs...this may be what is causing your concern

@Flo Mangan Ha ha, yes, a great testament to Thomasville furniture! It may still be around with new fabric! Very good advice and thank you. 🙂

@Design Interior South Thank you so much for sharing your suggestions/ ideas. They are great! I really do love the French Blue velvet for sofa and chair. And love the Brunschwig and Fils Bird & Thistle print! Yes to the trim on drapery. Great idea. That green rug is absolutely striking! Love the softer colors too! Where are they from please? This is always my dilemma...I love so many different things! 🙂

I too had a Thomasville sofa. Hunter green. That thing weighed a ton. A TON. I know because it was our first "major" piece of furniture we purchased and we moved 3X with it and each time I had to help move it because we moved ourselves! In all my years I don't think I have even come across a sofa that has weighed as much as that one. I wonder if they had upholstered a dead body inside it or something?

    @lynartist Sigh....Lee Joffa and Thibaut. ❤
These color combinations just make me happy. So so beautiful! Thank you!

@RedRyder Thank you! I love that blue also.

@btydrvn Yes, thank you. I do agree with the single cushion suggestion and trims. And yes to the velvet! ❤ I'm teetering on whether the French blue or the green. I love both!

@Design Interior South Ha ha Oh my goodness!!! I'm loving the Thomasville sofa stories!

The greens suits the “accent” aspect of the couch ...the blue would blend in more...if that is possible with such a striking piece!

The jdea of mixed but co-ordinating prints on the front and back of the chair is appealing because of the bigger upholstery spaces on the chair...or green velvet back and print on front to make more of a “set” with the couch

Have you priced out the new foam, a GOOD foam? Foam has a life of certain years and this one absolutely has to be replaced...all of it. I've done reupholstery, new foam is quite the expense even when doing the actual reupholstery by myself. I reread your text, so you are having this professionally done? I love solid old furniture that was made right, good for you for bringing this back to life :)

@btydrvn I tend to lean more with the greens also. Not a dark green or emerald as I feel it would possibly date it more but more similar toward grass or moss? I tried fabric in the "blue sky" color and to me, it really didn't accent the wood that much. I am going to try a French Blue however and see as it's a beautiful color. And I do love the idea of mixing on the front/back of chair and building up the back some like @lynartist suggested also.
I'm so appreciative of this forum and everyone. Staying in my own head, I go around and around with decisions but putting it here and the feedback really helps so much. Thank you all.

@lucky998877 Oh yes, I have an upholsterer that will do it. I would not be able to do this justice with my "simple dining room chair seat" experience. Ha ha.
And thank you. I love the old pieces too that can be brought back to current with new textiles while maintaining their character.

I'm of the school that would upholster the sofa in a cream or beige. I would use vibrant pillows and ceramics to pick up colors. This would allow you to go in any direction with with paint. Paint is cheap and upholstery is expensive.

The sofa color decision should be made in context of the overall room design. sjard11, rather than try to decide on what color you would it to be you should decide what you would like your room to ultimately look like!

Start saving inspiration pics to your ideabook so we can get a better feel for what you want in this space and post better overall photos of your room. That way we may be able to help you make a decision.

@lynartist Thank you. I understand this. It makes sense. I haven't used the idea book but will do that.
I want to post current pics of this room that connects our dining room but right now it's a complete mess as I have 2 sofas, a vertical piano and several chairs which all need reupholstered. ha ha
Although its driving me nuts to have it finished, I have to step back, gather myself and realize that this isn't something that should create anxiety considering all that world is dealing with. I'm blessed and thankful in many ways and this will get figured out just fine.
I like the idea of saving photos of rooms that inspire.
    Thank you again. 🙂

@homechef59 Thank you for the link. I will give it a look! So true about paint vs. upholstery. Will keep that in mind in this decision making process. 🙂

Well ...it is getting confusing..but my feeling is ...this is a forever piece...doesn’t need to match anything...it will always be an accent piece..BUT should be a color you love..and not so dark the trims get lost...the reason i favor a yellow green is it is a color of mothers natures most vibrant offerings...i cant think of a color it would not go with...green leaves go with every colored flower...i would never choose a “safe” color for a piece like this

I’m with you btydrvn but then again I have a red sofa!😂‼️

I’m not exactly afraid of color so take what I say with a grain of salt😂‼️

@lynartist Stunningly beautiful!!! Love it! Thank you for sharing. You are NOT afraid of color! No wonder you said my room had no color! Ha ha
This is inspiring and what I needed to put together my room(s) Not red, but definitely a color. 🙂

Thank you. Yes red is a scary color😂‼️

@btydrvn It is a bit confusing because I've been so wishy washy in my decision. Lol
Thank you for breaking it down in those words. I couldn't agree more. I love the color green. And blue. But I've always seen this sofa as green but wanted to keep an open mind. Thanks so very much to everyone for your comments.

Aaaah...but Lyn ....that red is perfect in your room...!

Please get samples of both green and blue velvets to see which one makes you happier. The wood trim CAN be re-stained to be a better match for any fabric you choose. I do love Thibaut fabrics and used their wallpapers in a previous home. Their stuff is gorgeous and probably there is a fabric that will look great on the chair, but the sofa comes first. Once that huge decision is made, the chair and rug and other accessories follow. This sofa is the center of attention in any room, believe me! It will be gorgeous. (And please consider the single cushion idea again....)

@RedRyder Thank you for this. I do plan on getting samples this week to review. Sofa first! Single cushion for seat and no tufting. 🙂 Thibaut or Schumacher fabrics would be incredibly beautiful but they are very expensive and may not be in my budget but I won't rule out.

You don’t need to buy Lee Joffa and Schumacher, Thibaut for your upholstery. There are plenty of beautiful fabrics out there for much less$$$! If you love a Thibaut or Schumacher print then buy a couple of pillows in that fabric for a bit of a splurge and some visual impact!

@Homechef59 That is a gorgeous red sofa! You clearly show how dramatic colors are showstoppers!

Lynartist is right. You can find “similar” types of fabrics, but SOMETIMES you can find just enough leftover for a pillow, chair seat, chair back, etc. First, choose the color of the sofa then everyone here will help fill in the fabulous fabrics to complement it.

@Lynartist @RedRyder Thank you!!! I will share sofa fabric soon!

and your upholstery suggestions for the @sjard11!!!!

I've found enough fabric for pillows at Ebay! Yes, do a search for whatever the fabric name is and someone may have enough of a remnant that could make pillows. I've also seen the Ballard Designs Fabrics for sale for more than 50% off.
