Big fabric ottoman..love that. Thank you for ideas! The love seat won't work right in front of tv ( tried it) the hallway is just too slim. I also have two small brown wooden chairs with console table on the wall facing the fireplace. Pic below. What color ottoman you think? Knowing me ill pick up a brown one :)

I think you could try either an exciting coloured or patterned ottoman. It would really break up the matching dark leather.

Your art matches the walls and adds no color or interest. It is also hung too high - see, it is above the window frame, and the bottom edges should be 5" above the sofa back. The two of them are wider than the love, and art above it should be no more than 75% of the sofa's width. We can't see enough of your space - missing at least two other angles - to be of much help, but I'm thinking you'll enjoy the TV more if it is hung on that wall above a low credenza. Then one piece of art can go above the FP and the other in your dining room, if you have one. Too bad you bought a matched set of seating, a two smaller swivel chairs would make your space much more flexible.

Not brown!! Anything but brown - NO more brown!!! : ) what colors do you want to bring into the room? What do you use this room for? Do any of the rooms that adjoin this have a color that you would want to pull into this room? What kind of feel do you want the room to have? What are your favorite colors? Go look in your closet at your favorite clothes - what color are they? Ideally, you should find some kind of "inspiration piece" and pull your colors from that. Find a fabric, a pillow, curtain, a decorative element - anything you can pull a color palette from. I've used a tea set in the past - anything that you can pull colors from.

Right now your room is almost all one tone and texture. There is no variety - nothing to move the eye around.

I would look for an oval shaped ottoman. You have a lot of squares right now, it would be nice to soften the edges a little.

Could you swap out the chairs on either side of your console? Two upholstered chairs would look gorgeous there. Or, maybe throw some slip covers over the existing chairs? Again, all to monochromatic and hard looking. You need to soften with color and texture.

@ang wutz - I have looked through my entire house.. Every room is brown, beige, black and hints of green! I have no color! Not sure what color to bring out. I just like earth tones i guess. Or I'm deeply afraid of colors.

Have you looked in your closet? Surely you wear a bit of color yourself? Is there something colorful that you often get compliments on when you wear it. That might be your direction.

Well earth tones are color! You just need to have lots of variety of texture if you are going to be more monochromatic. If you are keeping the arrangement as is, you will want a bigger arm chair similar to what you have. I would consider moving the arrangement to face the fireplace, though. Try it with your chairs from either side of you console and see if a smaller chair would allow you to arrange it that way. I've attached some ideas for either situation.

it looks like one of the armchairs has a footstool? does it have storage in it?

if so, put the console table and chairs in a different room, and put the stool in it's place, with 1 or 2 other small stools in the same scale. add a thin shelf over it, and some art. then you put your big ottoman between the chairs and the sofa.

i would also angle the chairs, if you're leaving them where they are. pull them apart just a bit, and angle the one near the fireplace toward the opposite corner. the one near the hallways, angle it toward the fireplace, just a bit.

then get a soft green throw (since you said you like that color), and drape it over one of the chairs.
get some textured pillows (any shade of brown that is NOT the furniture, and maybe one with a little green on it?) for the other chair and sofa.

and some window treatments would be lovely.
if you're not sure of color, you could go with a light tan linen panel. it'll add texture without confusing the color palatte.


and i love the slipper chairs that ang_wutz posted. especially the dots.

Consider adding a tall plant like a kenzia .... Maybe in the corner. A different carpet will help. Also some accent like a glossy vase of a complement color. Your floor is wood so instead of art you can have some metal candle holders. Pier1 and zgallery have some nice ones

And I would not think adding more furniture pieces is ideal for such a small place

Your TV is very high...can you get your couch far enough to watch it comfortably?. I think the TV should be where the couch is, the couch where the chairs are and the chairs facing the fireplace with table/lamp between them. Put TV on a long console low enough to watch comfortably. I would put your console table with the pillows on it, behind your couch with either a lamp on it or a floor lamp on the couch end nearest the fireplace. I would bring in aqua or red vases, pots, accent pieces. Put one of your pictures above the fireplace....the other in the hallway with two wood chairs under it.

Move the end table and lamp to the other side of the sofa.

Lower the pictures so they're just 5 inches above the back of the sofa.

Add some interesting pillows.

Also, have you considered putting the TV over the console table? Then, use the art over the mantel. Can't see what the pictures are above the console table so you might want to get something else (esp. if they're family photos)

It's very hard to decorate a mantel with the TV above the FP. That's one thing that makes your room look sort of bare even though it's a very nice room.

Do us a favor and try the couch across from the fireplace and put a chair in front of each window beside the fireplace. Do not have the couch extend past the rug and then it should not be in the hallway area at all. Put the console where the couch was and remove the chairs that were beside it....then nothing will be in that walk way area. Take the pillows off the bottom of the console and off the chairs and put them ON the sofa and chairs in the room. That will break up some brown, too. If this does not work, we will all help move it back!!!

Please don't move the tv from over the fireplace. It will split the focal point and make the room feel much less cozy and inviting. It is hard to accersorize a tv over a fireplace, but you can do it. You will probably only need one thing - like your latern, but in an earth tone so you get some contrast from the fireplace. You can also compensate by using art on all your other walls. Soften by adding fabric throughout - windows and pillows, and rehanging your art.

I agree that the TV is too high to be comfortable to look at- it should be closer to eye level from where you are sitting. Of course that is all if you are willing to move it and if you don't really use the TV that often then it isn't that big of a deal.

I think erinsean's layout would work best for that.

Sliding doors to the outside area are behind the chairs.

Your room is basic and nice, but lacks color and texture. You have many choices. Paint one wall as accent color, add window treatment, change out the rug, add pillows, add or change around your art. Not sure about your budget...

I centered the rug to the fireplace (not sure why it wasn't before :) and moved the love seat in front of the fireplace..not sure that I like it this way. The tv is high so I'm hurting my neck on the sofa looking at it ( we don't watch tv that much any way it's just for the kids so its all Thomas the train at the moment and they usually sit on the rug to watch it while playing) but here is a picture of the other wall -it's just sliding doors to backyard. I think I'm going to sell the chairs and get smaller fabric slipper chairs.. Those were quite nice above :) And adding a green throw :)

How far can the couch go back before you hate it? Do you hate it more up close or in the way a little? Does that make sense? I like the start of what is happening here, though. Does even a foot make a good difference for the tv watchers and not an awful difference for the walking space?

I know what you mean. I think I would rather have it up close then in the hall, because even when I take out the console table it doesn't leave that much room to the wall behind it. Also I feel like right when I walk in the house I see the back of the sofa. I could put a table behind it, but then going back to not having much room in the hallway with that wall right there.

Just because I do not have my bearings in your room yet and not sure where the entrance/hall is.......switching the rug to the long way and pushing the couch all the way back to where the console is and having the ottoman in front of it as a coffee table is NOT an option???????

I am trying to wrap my head around your family room flow to offer some thoughts. Flat screens over mantles are tricky.
As necks and proportions both come into play. So I will try to honestly give you some thoughts. I could see the tv moved to the current wall where the loveseat sits. I would mount it on the wall with your existing sofa/console table below still with the two pull up chairs flanking the console. Then the loveseat can switch places with the two large chairs. The rug looks perfect then add The large chairs side by side facing fireplace with some smallish accent table between. I can see a mirror over the mantle where tv was. You may even be able to shop your home for the accent table leaving your only cost being having tv moved and purchasing a great mirror....

I think this one is worth a try^ The chairs as is would be a little big, but since you said you are wanting to get the slipper chairs I think they would be a great size.

In the meantime/before moving the TV you could just put the console on the wall, get the two black chairs out of the way, and put the two wooden ones (since they are smaller) where joyanello suggested (facing the fireplace) with the end table in between?

That would help you picture it before buying/dismantling anything.

I would at least try the two large chairs facing the fireplace as there will be no table directly behind and more room to walk...you will know immediately if they won't work then you can consider buying two new smaller scale chairs. Sometimes you just need to give it a try to visualize. Good luck!

And if not a nice mirror than a nice art piece that reflects the color of the slip chairs / pillows you're adding. Then you could add more little vases/knick knacks to go along with the white object on your mantle that match the colors you choose and bring in the tan/brown colors as well. .

Love colors in your example would add some needed color above mantle. Also forgot to mention loveseat and chairs only need to have their front legs placed on area rug. Felt circles can be placed under feet to protect hardwood.

Oh - I LOVE abbyjean's suggestion of moving the couch all the way back to the wall. Assuming the only thing you need to get to is the sliding doors. Can't tell if there is anything else over that way. I do REALLY like the love seat facing the TV. I would definitely think about removing the console table and pushing the love seat back as far as possible. If you do go with smaller chairs, you could use your console on the wall where you used to have your love seat. I really hate the idea of moving the TV to another wall. Then it's like your just ignoring the huge fireplace and it becomes this elephant in the room. Is it possible to get one of those cool mounts that would allow you to tilt the TV to make it more comfortable for viewing?

Yes I loved it to! Everyone has had great suggestions! I tried the love seat against the wall to where the console table is but that hallway leads straight to the kitchen (I think in one of the pics you can see part of a high chair lol) but I do think the chairs are too big so looking for chairs like the ones posted earlier :) I'm going to try tilting the tv down as well.

I thought there might be more rooms on the other side of the sliding doors. Well - you could still move the console and push the couch back as far as you can. I do agree that your chairs - while beautiful are very big and bulky for the space. Post pictures once you decide what you are going to buy. I had one other thought about making it a little more cozy. You could paint just the three walls of the "room" a slightly different color. You would want to pull your accent color - maybe green? I'm working of the assumption that there is a corner on the side of your sliding door. You want to have the color change - just slightly - to make this feel like a little nook.
