where are you .. did you find the seed locally ... are there any others around.. how far ... etc ...

In Virginia, got the seed from a friend who traded seeds online. Just had the one seed and grew this tree but it does not seem to produce the buckeye nuts.

Not all of them are rounded and bulbous in these shots as well:

But: do yours ever get to a point that they have viable seeds inside? Because that would be a key distinction between whether or not the fruits are developing fully. It certainly is true that at this stage anyway the ones in your picture have sunken looking sides, as though they are empty.

Maybe your property happens not to have the right pollinators around at flowering time.

Right, up to now they have never had nuts developing inside. So I wondered if it takes a second tree to cross pollinate. Have a yard FULL of perennials and flowers, flowering trees and more. Lots of bees wasps and other ones especially when the mountain mint is blooming but there are bees etc. around all spring, summer and through the fall. They just produce the shrunken looking tan papery things you see in the photo and then fall off. Never found a buckeye yet but keep watching. I see what you mean though lots of different shapes in those photos. Thank you!

No it does not take a second tree . I started one from seed. . It flowered and fruited while still quite small. It was the only A . pavia I have seen around here. I now have seedlings and one seedling has already flowered and produced fruit.

As was stated in a previous reply, your tree may not have the proper pollinators.

Ok well I wonder what they would be since everything else in the yard does just fine? Hoping one year it may give me buckeyes.

In nature, there are many plants that can only be pollinated by a specific insect that is *usually* also only present within the range of that plant, often they have co-dependencies.

Birds can be pollinators also. With the coloring and shape of red buckeye flowers looking just like they are intended for hummingbirds.

Thank you, I'm going to be watching closely to see if any develop. Each flower cluster pretty much has the brown pods so seems like there should be something there, with so many, even by accident. Failing that will try to root a cutting. Moving on soon and want to take this with me to start again. Such a nice small, neat shaped tree.

Perhaps the tree is a cross that will not produce viable seed

This is what I'm wondering. Grew it from a nice fat buckeye nut though. Checked again yesterday and it is doing the usual thing, just the ones shown in photos. And it bloomed the most this year, very pretty tree in spring.
