Is it hot where you are?

We did some gardening this afternoon here in Los Angeles, and the temperature was 71° with a cool breeze, which made working in the yards much easier. Meanwhile, it is 110° in Palm Springs, but I also noticed that it was 100° in Paris and 88° in London, which seems rather hot for there. I watch the weather reports on Deutsche Welle, and I had a hard time believing it was as hot in Paris and London as they reported, but evidently it is true. However, they said it was 64° in Vancouver yesterday, but today Wunderground says it was 74°, and Seattle was 76° - both warmer than at my house in L.A. Even San Francisco was warmer than L.A. at 75°.

I'm going to Palm Springs on Tuesday (I think), but I've been reluctant to leave L.A. this time because I am appreciating the cool weather - plus I have a lot of bromeliads and orchids blooming right now, plus my ginger has begun to bloom. I hate missing out on the flowers when I go to the desert. Yes, there are a lot of Mexican Bird of Paradise in the desert, plus a few other bright desert flowers, but not the variety that I have in my back yard here.

Are you able to work in your gardens at this time?

Yes, it was hot today in central Wisconsin. 90. Forecast high tomorrow is 85 and then a delightful 70 for the day after.

69f in the bay area. That's just too cool for August. January? whoo-hoo,great day.

Back to mid 70's today, then the 80f cycle starts again.

    I'm picky on my weather.😉👍

We are having a 60-degree temperature drop over the next 48 hours. And snow. Shoot me now :)

I wouldn't want the snow, but I could do with a 60-degree drop in temperatures.

My phone says its 101 in South Orange County, Ca right now.

"We are having a 60-degree temperature drop over the next 48 hours. And snow. Shoot me now :)"

LOL!! Only in Colorado....where it can be summer one day and winter the next.

The forecast for San Francisco (Castro Station) was 101°, but I think it only got up to 98 or so. Our forecast was for 120°, but it only got up to 115°, and I think tomorrow will be the same.

Overall, it's pretty hot almost anywhere in California right now. Typically, September is the hottest month, especially on the coast. Inland, I think August is the hottest month, but so far September has been hotter here. We're going back to Los Angeles this week-end for 2-3 weeks, and it should be back down in the upper 70s to low 80s by then. Today it was 100° in Westchester, and that is close to the beach. Venice was 95, which is really hot for the beach.

I just covered up 4 of my avocado trees that are in ground with shade cloth for the next couple of days with this heat wave. Giving them water every morning lately and the same with daily watering of my container citrus trees but leaving them in full sun with no shade.

Hot in S.D. They've asked us to reduce energy use during peak hours and that's ok... . maybe Shield's Date Garden still is serving date shakes.. yum !

High today was 75. 63 forecast for tomorrow & 50 degree high on Tues & Wed.

I saw 103f and as I write its still 100f. We must have set a summer record of morning lows of 68f or warmer this year, maybe 7 so far in a climate that can skip a whole summer of 68f or warmer for a low and usually has one maybe two.

In Santa Cruz County we got up to 111 deg. today and I am 5 miles from the ocean. Glad we put in AC 2 years ago when we had our last heat wave. Been in CA for 43 years and never had weather like this until the last few years.

It's 74 right now and probably in the 80s this afternoon when I was out painting he garage door. The sun was beating down on that bright white paint, making it hard to look at. I'm glad I don't live out West though.

We’re done with heat for this season in MN. It’s been lovely the last week or so - in the 70s. Going to be colder the next couple days - high around 50. I dread moving into the season of closed windows and darkness. 😕

Oakland hit 100 degrees today, quite a bit warmer than forecast (I guess onshore breezes weren't as strong as expected). I know we had it better than most of California, but not fun. No AC; I ran the window fan a bit this morning before it heated up even though the air quality was borderline (borderline seemed pretty good compared to our worst days with smoke from the wildfires). I'll run the fans this evening when the temp outside drops below the temp inside.

    Santa Rosa hit 111 today. It’s 102 at 7pm. No AC. 🥵

We hit 91 today on the CA coast, which is crazy hot for us. Thankful for a portable AC unit, which keeps our master bedroom cool. We have had a cool summer, with a couple patches of crazy high temps.

It was 81 outside a few minutes ago.

No AC, but I'm seriously thinking about a ceiling fan for the bedroom.

Edited to add: I noticed the sky had odd coloring this evening -- as in something's not right. Checked online, and there's a brush fire in Azusa -- some distance east of here.

    In the house today.

I feel for you guys out west. It's fairly normal here in the east but will hit 90 Tuesday. I'm so done with this stupid year with the heat, drought , covid.

It looks like it did indeed hit 100 in SF, at least downtown. It was 111 in Ukiah. I had a nice 109F day. Apparently, down south per the NWS, a station in Woodland Hills hit 121F! San Luis Obispo at 117...

100 in SF is like 110 elsewhere.

I am feeling for all of you out west. We've had just a gorgeous weekend here in the Carolinas. Amazing how nice 80's and lower humidity feels.

That 121 was the hottest ever recorded in L.A. county. L.A. includes the high desert and it still was a record.

At 10 pm,outdoors here in the SF eastbay? it was perfectly still and in the 80's.

It pretty much breaks today and long range is for average to slightly ( it's always slightly above nowadays) above for the next ten days.

If it wasn't for December and January I could plant Coconuts.!

I have to take back that it breaks today. Near 100f for Monday and Tuesday is NOT a break- ha.

More: NWS says we set a record yesterday of 106f and 72f for a low. I'm in the bay area..just 15 minute drive to the waters of SF bay. 106 and those hot nights..should not be common in summer like this year. I tell you,WU uses old all time records and for the month 55f is what it used to be like in the 60's -1970's. I cant get over warm nights especially.

Warm nights will get to you. I was raised here and although we'd have hot days(nothing like today's hot) we always had nights in the low 60's. This summer no night went below 70 so it never cooled off for two full months.

It never reached 100° when I lived in San Francisco, but when it reached the 80s, it was unbearably hot, and no one I knew had air conditioning. We had to go to bars or restaurants.

In Palm Springs, 121° feels like 118° - still warmer than 110, but it cools down in the evening. By Wednesday is is supposed to cool down to 98°, which I am looking forward to.

So. Calif--Two days of 111 degrees was rough. People who live in Phoenix or Vegas expect this, but not here!! My poor camellia (covered in flower buds) is burned up, leaves like potato chips. I wonder if the buds will open. Today was supposed to be in the 90's but it's only 88. The ash from fires is on the ground everywhere and blocking the sun. It's eerie outside; the sunlight looks odd, like an eclipse. The sun was a red-orange ball when it came up. Yeah @lily316, 2020 is a terrible year in so many ways.

I feel extremely lucky to have AC, but boy, do I feel caged. I just went to drop off a couple of envelopes at the post office and it felt good, if not HOT, to be out!

I just cannot imagine that kind of heat and I sympathize with all of you that are experiencing it.

And I will graciousy refrain from commenting on how wonderful and comfortable our local weather is at the moment. Ooops....guess I did anyway 😊

The forecast today for my area (not far from the Oregon border) was for it to reach 104 today but smoke and ash is keeping it from getting anywhere near that. It is currently a pleasant 87 degrees outside, but the air quality is terrible. Staying inside for the foreseeable future.

Denver is 95f today...dropping to 34F tomorrow!..A snowstorm is moving in with 50 mph winds. Lows by Wednesday in the low 20's. Back to 80's by the weekend for them.. THAT'S a wild ride.

    last modified: 6 years ago

Today was a nice break from the heat with temperatures only reaching the upper 70's. The forecast is for the heat and west winds to return tomorrow, but with temperatures only reaching the lower 80's, not over 100 like it was yesterday.

stan, I am in Denver. To add insult to injury we have horrible fires so the sky is filled with ash and smoke. And the wind from the North is blowing the manure odor from the feedlots all over the Denver metro. It is truly a xxxxshow.

Triple digits by noon. Hot even in the mountains. Water was evaporating off the horse faster than I could get it down to her skin when hosing her off after our Labor Day ride. Heat is supposed to break a bit tomorrow. Sure hope so.

    Extremely.

    Very unusual.

It only got up to 109° today (Monday) in Palm Springs - way below the predicted 119°, and so it felt fairly comfortable.

The air smelled like smoke, and we assumed that it was from neighbors having a Labor Day BBQ, but it's difficult to tell. At 5 PM the sun looked an eerie red, but it was very pretty. I think the haze kept the temperature down, but I cannot tell whether it was from smoke or just regular haze. I could not see the mountains, however, and they are very close.

Cooler today- low 90's. But the sky is like Ambervision. Those sunglasses from the 70's and 80's? Remember those?...everything right now has a tint.

In Carlsbad, CA....in low mid 70s today, was 86 in backyard yesterday, an oppressive 104 on Sunday.....the official temp Sunday was 100 at the local airport and that was a record. Humid and very hazy or overcast the past couple of days, occasionally smells like smoke. The smoke makes it rather dim/dark out and there is a new layer of ash on surfaces outside the past 3 mornings. Nearest fire is in southeast of San Diego about 30-35 miles away. So sad to hear of all the fires in the western states. Thank you firefighters, stay safe.

60s today and wet. We needed the rain and mist, although not as badly as you do out west.

38 degrees last night, mid 50s for a high. Too early for brrrrr.

at about 4:30, the office windows turned dark like the sun was setting. A massive cloud of smoke and ash appeared. But it was downright cool after Sunday's high. I could not even imaging what 121F feels like -- I once had a job offer in Woodland Hills. Sounded ideal, just up the canyon from the beach.

    121° feels like a sauna

At 10:25 pm, it is 92° with 6% humidity. I think the dew point is 21°, but dew points are not much of an indication of comfort here.

My aunt lives in the hillside above Monrovia and waiting for possible evacuation. All her family photos and artwork was placed in my van two nights ago. The ash and smoke covered my garden. Today the sky is golden sometimes peach. That is keeping the heat down. I had two days of 112 by Disneyland. Burned leaves everywhere. Thinking of removing plants in the back and putting up a big shade house for the ferns and orchids. I put up as many canopies and beach umbrellas as I could. If we are doing this every year now I'm changing what I'm planting. I hope my aunt's home doesn't burn.

On Monday afternoon at about 5 pm it got really dark- as if it were about 20 minutes post sunset - then the tornado sirens sounded. That initial storm skimmed just north of my neighborhood, with strong gusts and just a sprinkle of rain here - the tornado touched down about 12-13 miles north of me. It was "only" an EF 0, thankfully. The next wave of the storm brought back the wind, and drenching rain that lasted longer - needed so badly in my neighborhood, we are having a localized drought.

We didn't lose power from those storms, but did the next morning. Don't know if that was from storm damaged trees, or just a squirrel with a death wish.

I thought it was odd to spin up such a storm, since although humid, it hadn't been nearly as hot on Monday as many other days recently. But, atmospheric conditions were just right I guess.
