Heat Pump condensate issue

I’ve owned a Bryant HP for just over 20 years when the fan motor went out. The replacement cost was prohibitive so I bought a TRANE 4WTW4 unit. It was in early winter. It worked fine until the summer season here in VA when I turned the AC on. It wasn’t cooling much, in fact it was putting out warm air instead of cold air. I called the folks who installed the unit and they found that on installation they had wired the thermostat incorrectly. They corrected it and it seemed to be working fine. Our summers are hot and humid but I keep the AC room temp at 80-82. I am comfortable at that temp. I noticed that no condensate was coming out of the pump discharge and placed something to catch the water if it was coming out. Nothing is coming out. I called the techs back and they checked the coolant pressure, operation of the condensate pump etc and said everything was fine. He said that at the temp 80-82 the humidistat will not sense the moisture so nothing will come out. He said I have to set the thermostat much lower to produce condensate. My 20 year old Bryant didn’t have that problem and produced lots of condensate with the thermostat set at 80-82. Then they billed me for the visit even though the HVAC is under warranty. My question is: are they right, do I have to set the thermostat a lot lower to produce condensate or is there a possible issue with the humidistat. The house doesn’t feel humid but I would just like another opinion on this. Of course, cooling the house to a lower temp will be too cold for me. Thanks.

    Virginia can be quite humid. Recheck the model number of your new TRANE HP.. You replaced the inside air handler as well? What is mdl number.? Take a reading of inside humidity. If your AC cooling is working correctly, you should be lowering humidity and seeing condensate draining. I would not pay that bill until the issue is resolved. Make a note of time of day, outside temperature, outside RH, inside temp and thermostat setting. The condenser has to run to work correctly. I would set the thermostat at 78 for a day and check for condensate. Your tech is blowing smoke.

    Just an update, the new Trane System is both the outside unit and inside air handler unit.
    HEAT PUMP (Model# 4TWR4048GI000AC)

    AIR HANDLER (Model# TEM4AOC48S41SBA)

    So I had to go out and get a hydrometer (hygrometer) and recorded some values from yesterday. The inside temp is running 79 and the humidity 61-63. The corresponding outside temp has varied from 68-83 and the outside humidity 70-99. Right now inside humidity 62 and outside 86. I've lowered the thermostat to 76 and will report whether there is any condensate, later today.. Both the Trane and the Bryant are 4 ton units. Thanks for your support on this.

    The dew point for 79 degree air temperature and 61-63% humidity is about 64 degrees. That means if the coil in the air handler is below 64 degrees then water will condense on the coil. Measure the temperature coming out of the supply closest to the air handler to get an approximate air temperature passing over the coil.

    I think condensate is being produced but for some reason it is not flowing into the condensate pump. Could there be a drain which bypasses the what is going to the pump?

    If your inside humidity is around 61 RH, then your home will be susceptible to mold issues. You should be looking for an inside supply temp no higher than 60-61 degrees with Delta temp split between 15-20 degrees.

    So I lowered the thermostat to 75. The inside temp ranged 73-75, humid 54-57 with outside temp 83-84 and humid 56. I put a glass mercury thermometer (old lab) at the vent and the air coming out is around 60-63 as best I can read it. So 2 hours after lowering the thermostat and getting the above readings, there is still no condensate coming out of the discharge pipe. I can regulate the thermostat to keep the RH below 60 but the condensate is still the puzzle. Thanks for your continued input.

    Where is your condensate supposed to drain? This is a mystery. leave your settings for 24 hrs and retake readings mid day tomorrow and report. Your mercury thermometer probably not the best.

    Thanks for that. The condensate supposedly drains to a small pump which then pumps the water outside. I put a container there but nothing all day. When the guy came out to "solve" the problem he poured water into the pump reservoir and when it was full the pump shot it outside. Is it possible that there is a plug or obstruction preventing the condensate from getting to the pump? If I base the volume on the old Bryant, we are talking about many gallons of water. There are no wet spots around the pump, at least none that he could see. I put the hydrometer on the vent and that got the same relative temperatures to the mercury thermometer.

    The last reading last night was 77 deg and 55 Hum inside and 73 deg and 94 Hum outside. Thermostat was left at 77 deg. This morning 4 readings in side temp 77 deg and Hum 55-56 inside, outside temp 73-77 and Hum 84-96 Still no condensate.
