Congrats on your new home, you have a blank canvas which is fantastic!

Have a hunt through the photos on Houzz for living room pics you like. Add them to an Idea book. You can then review the idea book to see if there are themes you have focused on. Maybe you like country style, or mid century, or boho. Once you have got an idea of that, then look at the colours you are drawn to. Maybe you like greens, or blues.

Now you have style, colours, you can start thinking about putting the room together. A classic start if to do the 60%, 30%, 10% rule. 3 colours where your walls at 60 will be the dominant colour, 30% will be things like sofas and curtains and 10% are your accents like cushions.

Post photos and thoughts on this thread about the stuff you have found. The community on here is fantastic and will give you great feedback on your choices and help you think of stuff you wouldn't normally have considered.

Grey is complicated because it can look quite blue which means that it can clash with other neutrals As you said, your cream carpets were easy to fit things around, that is probably because cream hued walls look a bit warm and easy on the eye. Cool grey walls can feel too cold in light starved rooms which is not an easy thing to get right. Timeless is looking quite yellow next to your carpet because the blue in the carpet is exaggerating the creaminess of the paint. I would be looking at a sofa you like and then decide if you want to change the carpet. Go onto Pinterest and google grey carpets in lounge to see if you like the feel of what you see.

Colours are very personal and photographs are not always a true representation however my bedroom carpets are all a similar colour. I have painted my walls and ceilings Farrow and Ball Wevet which is the very palest grey. Actually it was colour matched at a Johnstones trade outlet so I know the mix is white black red and yellow! Sounds awful but to the casual observer it looks white. The main thing is it has no blue tones and picks up light and shade to provide interest. I then just add bright colours that take my fancy.

I have grey carpet in my lounge and a light grey suite. I think they look good together (well I would wouldn’t I 😂). My walls are Dulux Tranquil Dawn and I have green in my curtains.

As other have said it’s a colour that goes with almost anything.

Perhaps look for a cream suite?

@ Tim Baker. You have solved one of my problems. I am soon to replace my kitchen worktops and will have to repaint the walls. I currently have a very pale grey on them so pale that if you didn’t look at the top of the wall contrasting against the ceiling you may think they’re white. I wanted the same colour again, but finished the can and threw it away 😫. I’ve just looked at Wevet and it’s exactly what I’m looking for. I’m also a Johnstone paint lover so will get a sample pot to try out. Problem solved.

Maybe try Wevet with the carpet to see if it works. If the room gets plenty of light then it could. Then look at sofas and avoid colours that are too yellow.

Which direction does the light come from? If it’s a north facing room the light will be bluer and colder. Light source affects colour. Paint a good sized piece of lining paper with potential colours and move it around the room as well. But as someone else said, you’ve got a decent neutral colour on the walls and once you have your furniture, or know what you want to get, see what will go well on the walls then. Have fun!

Think about the space holistically, do you have enough storage, what is the light like, how do I use the space. Then start planning how you want to space to look and feel. You can get inspiration from Houzz (I have various idea books on Houzz if you want a peek) or Pinterest, magazines (Dwell is very good), other peoples houses, even Ikea room sets and collect images of things you like. You will see a pattern start to emerge.

Then you can decide on wall colours, floor covering, furniture etc. It's all up to you, your style, the space and light.
