Photos of granite above. No kitchen, yet. We are building and just started.

The kitchen will be large and opened to family room, with a large island in the center. A triple window over the sink, and a bank of windows in breakfast area off to one side, French doors on other side. 10' ceilings. Go with what you love and don't worry about people saying it's dated. I'd much rather see a natural stone in a kitchen then the trendy fake looking quartz.

I do think that "speckled" granites - which most builder's grade granites were - and big, bold, lots of "movement" granites which so many were drooling over even six years ago really have fallen out of favor.

Your choice is not really either - it is a bit busy but when seen installed (horizontal not vertical) and if surrounded by other elements that are not busy or fussy, I think will look fine.

The important point is, are you picking it for the colors, or do you really like the pattern? If you really like the pattern then don't worry about "dated"; if you are lukewarm about the pattern and choosing it for the warm colors, perhaps keep looking.

"Dated" is such a silly insult. That granite is beautiful. If you love it, get it. Anyone else's opinion shouldn't matter.

I got talked out of my favorite stone by posters here..both professional and non-professionals. It never occurred to me that my favorite stone looked awful with my island color.

Does it make you happy?

Everything is dated. "Timeless" is a style that will eventually go the way of avocado appliances. White kitchens will be in style until they aren't.

I just changed a sink today in stone that looked a lot like that. While all the top had rust, around the sink it was really bad.

It's granite so it's millions of years old. That takes it beyond dated and into timeless! ;)

But honestly, the most important question is, 'do you like it?' If it makes you smile every time you see it, it's the right thing even if no one else agrees with you.

That said, the slab is a bit of a statement piece. And that means that the rest of your kitchen will be playing supporting roles. Too many divas is a disaster. Let your slab sing solo-- everything else should be understated.

Thanks all for the opinions. I let the granite go and looking elsewhere. Hate to say this, but my daughters were right! I had Venetian Gold in my last house and did not like it all that much. Thought Blue Dunes had more movement until I viewed it a second time today. Daughter that saw it in photos went with me. We looked at Ice White. Seemed a contender. Had some darker waves that could go warm. I think I am going to Charlotte and see what they have. My vendor recommended a couple of places.

Since you are building and have just started, I’d encourage you to think of this as a fresh start. Please don’t feel tied to warm colors just because that’s what you had before (existing furniture). That can always be worked around (or through). Instead, select stone/colors/pattern/finish that truly make your heart sing.

I got Blue Dunes in March 2021 and have no regrets. I love it, especially the blue crystal looking parts that remind me of glacial ice I saw in Alaska. What did end up getting?

Blue Dunes Granite is dated. It has been around for millions of years.

Rae-Ann Cadieux - I just happened to see this post reappear. I cannot believe that it's been a year!

Your granite is pretty and does look like the Alaskan glaciers.

We went with Fantasy Brown/Ocean Sands marble. Very pleased, but still working on the house. The colors of the counter are cooler than the Blue Dunes, but it still has a little warmth. Hard to see it in this photo, but there is a tad brown and little goldish tan tones. It looks dark gray and black here.

Trying to figure out wall paint color. What we have primed with is too light and gray. There is a paint strip next to the range cabinet that is SW Natural Linen that we are thinking of using. I would still like to go with wall color a tad more gold. Floors will be stained darker.

@SBDRH I like your Blue Dues as well. Did you do a backsplash? My search for a complementary backsplash is how I ended up on this thread.

@User I like the Natural Linen but it is hard to tell how it really looks in a picture. I ended up getting 3 stick on wall samples from https://samplize.com/ before I was able to settle on SW Reflection in my kitchen. It looks very different depending on the lighting. A blueish gray in my house, and has a hint of green in my mother's bathroom.

And @SBDRH has a GW/THS icon is her house ... the famous towel pig! 😁

Rae-Ann Cadieux - You would not believe how much I have spent on the Peel and Stick paint sample boards from both Samplize and Laura Rugh!!! I have found that even they come across as darker than an actual color painted on the wall. The paint that the wall is primed in is SW Neutral Ground. We thought that would be 'the one' until it was painted. Much too gray for us. On the P&S sample, the color looked like the paint strip of Natural Linen.

If you want to check some quartzites- Taj Mahal, White Princess and Infinity White may work.

@Rae-Ann Cadieux we did a wavy white subway tile backsplash. Here's the only pic I can find on my computer that shows it. I can take more pics if you're interested.

@SBDRH and @Rae-Ann Cadieux I'm also doing blue dunes with white cabinets and white floor. The designer at my tile shop is suggesting a navy blue. I just don't see it being an option at all!! I originally thought the white wavy subway too until she acted like we should be more original or dramatic. I am so glad to see your picture and that it looks the way I expected! I'm going to stop stressing until the cabinets and counters are installed. To me the countertop IS dramatic. I also like your paint color! @Rae-Ann Cadieux did you find a backsplash?

Hi I just put my deposit down this week on 2 slabs of leathered Blue Dunes. So here I am searching out reassurance on the ‘leathered’ I chose vs polished finish. Any visual ideas for flooring & backsplash would be great too. My perimeter (white), island (SW peppercorn / charcoal).

I LOVE my leathered blue dunes. Very easy to take care of.

@jamsession, I think the cabinet colors look perfect with your granite.

@jamsession this is my exact color - white perimeter with SW Peppercorn island. i originally picked Calacatta Prado Quartz. BUT, I saw Blue Dunes Suede today in person and I love it! its so gorgeous, I couldnt stop touching it. LOL

Now my husband and I are seriously considering Blue Dunes, which would be

a bolder choice over the ”safer” Calacatta Prado.

Here are pix of both countertops with my white cabinet, tiny peppercorn swatch, a borrowed grey cabinet (peppercorn is slightly darker) and my floor.

@jamsession and @Lara Elizabeth I love the combination of the white, grey, Blue Dunes. They look great together. Lara, that slab of Blue Dunes is beautiful! I still can not stop admiring mine almost a year later. I especially love the blue crystal-like spots.

jamsession, I can't speak to the leathered finish, but a year later I still love my Blue Dunes. I am just now getting around to doing a backsplash. With the darkness and drama in the grantie, it is recommended to do something simple like a white subway tile for a backsplash. I've seen a lot of folks that choose a subway tile with a bit of wavyness or texture to give it a little something extra.

I personally don't like the look of subway tile so I ended up selecting an off-white herringbone mosaic title. It has a bit of gold and grey in some of the pieces that pull colors from the granite. The grout will be a lighter grey that will blend in. We just picked it up and will install it in a few weeks. In this picture, it is the one on the right.

Here is my kitchen just before it was finished last year.

@Rae-Ann Cadieux thanks for sharing photos. Waiting a year to decide on a backsplash makes a lot of sense. I’m holding out on flooring & backsplash until I see my cabinets & tops installed.

Blue Dunes is a great choice. It goes well with MSI Angora Subway Polished Mosaic tiles.

@Lara Elizabeth how is your remodel coming along. My leathered Blue Dunes was installed yesterday. So gorgeous. I wanted to sleep on it. ☺️Now the fine details of cabinet crown moldings etc. Chose Coretec Grande Goldin Oak LVP flooring. No backsplash chosen yet. Hope it all compliments each other. So far things going smoothly. [Lara would like to see more of your kitchen since we chose same cabinet colors. Is there a way to private message with you?)

Although the Blue Dunes would have looked fine in my kitchen, I am very happy with the stone that we chose!!! Blends very well with my warm furnishings. 😉

We just had our leathered countertops installed too, and I can't stop touching them!!! I'm gonna be a mess when we actually move in!

I forgot to mention that we did keep the SW Neutral Ground paint color for the room. Once everything was said and done, the color actually has a touch of yellow and goes well with everything. We love it, and so glad that I did not go with a much darker color! I could have gone a tad darker with the SW Natural Linen, but would have required two coats. We would have had to pay extra. That's still an option when or if we need to paint again.

i am glad you found the marble that makes you happy. your pics look great. We are going with white cabinets and are considering leathered blue dunes. our island will be very large and part of an open floor plan to living room. Any thoughts on what stain color for hardwood floor would work well? We will have the same stain throughout the entire house.

It always surprises me when someone asks if a stone that has existed for thousands of years is outdated.

I dont think that blue dunes granite is outdated at all. it’s classic and tumeless look is why we are considering it, i am wondering what shades of stain applied to red oak tend to pair the best?
