I have missed you posting this summer and hope all is well with you. I always looked forward to your beautiful collection of hostas many that we can’t get here in the USA. Are you ok?

I think Karin has switched to succulents. I miss her posts too.

Wow!! She had all those amazing Frisians I recall. Maybe keeping up with the watering in pots was too much. I wonder if she is on the succulent forum.....

Yes Saija, I hadn’t thought of you but now that you made an appearance, your wonderful pictures are missed! For the ABCs, you could always use pics from last year....lol........So happy you are doing well......I am drooling over your coleus. I was not able to get any planted this year because of a surgery. I am doing well now though.

Great looking coleus. We grow lots of them too in large pots. My husband loves the extra large ones that grow 24 to 30+ inches tall. So many new varieties now.

Thanks everyone. Coleus is beautiful and easy plant. And hosta is even easier :)

Nicholworth: Retirement .... Congatulations. Auts squirrel :(

Maybe I will join alphabet with few pictures I have. I'm sure I regret in winter that I didn't take more pictures. But in summer there is always so much to do and that's why I haven't been here in forum.

Here in Finland weather is getting cooler and fall is coming. June was beautiful but July was cold and it was like fall weather. Gladly August has been warm. Some hostas are smaller than usually, maybe because on dry June ja cold July.

    Join alphabet? What's that?

Every winter in January-February, the forum goes through the alphabet and each day there is a letter of the day. For example, today is A day so everyone posts hosta pictures they have with hostas whose names begin with A. It's an upbeat way to think about gardening when the snow is the ground and the temperatures are cold (at least in my area). It also encourages people to buy more hostas since I always see pictures of hostas posted and I think, "wow", I want/need that one. lol

Anyone have a link? I can't find any "alphabet" forum, nor "hosta alphabet" forum. It isn't under hostas on Houzz, is it? I've googled and I've used the search function on Houzz. Just can't find anything that's not 10 years old.

Liquidfeet, Paula has been the organizer of the alphabet in the past. She saves up hysterical jokes to post every other day with each letter. Begins the day after Christmas, I believe. So as miles said, if you have hostas that begin with that letter, you can post them. It is great fun as he said! You see soooooo many beauties and as he said, you’ll make a list!

I need a link. Can't find this alphabet. Help!

djacob Z6a SE WI thanked liquidfeet Z6 Boston
  • 6 years ago

Liquidfeet, it happens right here on the hosta forum the day after Christmas. It’s not a separate link. It helps to create folders for each letter with your ideabooks. One for each letter, then put your hostas Pictures into those ideabooks ahead of time. Then when that letter day comes it’s easy to post them. It’s putsy but you can do while watching TV.

Finally found one. This is "O", but will give you the idea.

So there's no activity in any "alphabet" threads now, right? IT happens in Dec-Jan-Feb only, one letter per day until the letters run out? That would explain why I'm not seeing any "alphabet" threads, I guess. Thanks for the explanation!

Impressive coleus display! Coleus have done well in my garden this year. But nothing as beautiful as that.

I did a search for the alphabet threads, but was unable to find one. I finally resorted to just going back to the February posts to find one of the alphabets.

I found them later by searching for "hosta A 2019". Hosta A didn't come up, but Hosta Noids 2019, Hosta Blues 2019, hostas mini 2019 did come up.

Here is a link to what bkay found. It starts at the end when we do categories. If you scroll down far enough you could start with A and work your way through from the beginning Hosta Alphabet

@peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada, thank you. But when I click that link it takes me to the recent posts in the Hosta forum here. That's where I always go, and how I got to this thread just two minutes ago.

I guess what you're suggesting is for me to scroll down page after page after page after page and read each thread title until I hit something that looks like an alphabet post, right?

May I say that this Houzz platform is really awful?

Liquidfeet there are no posts for the alphabet because it starts after Christmas. Then it’s every other day. Here’s what you can do. Click on my cat photo which will take you to where my idea books are. Scroll down a bit and you will start seeing the books with a specific letter. Open one of those and it will show you exactly how it goes.

liquidfeet the link will show you the 2019 alphabet. The 2020 Alphabet will not start until Dec. 26th 2020.

For some reason the first post is about Hosta tailgate. The one below that is Noids, then Giant, Blue, Yellow, Mini, Green, Flowers, Seedlings, because after all the letters are finished we do categories. Then you will see the Hosta C then Hosta Companions then Hosta Z then Hosta Y. It is not in order because people catch up and someone added their C's after we were done.

Ideally it would show up in order but for whatever reason it does not. I think you would enjoy seeing the posts for the few seconds it takes to scroll down.

@peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada, this is what that link takes me to. It's the current posts page in the hosta forum. Evidently the link takes you to something different. Whoever designed Houzz needs to fix this.

djacob Z6a SE WI thanked liquidfeet Z6 Boston
  • 6 years ago

Well that is bizarre. What do others see?

liquidfeet if you enter through gardenweb you will likely see the proper page. People who enter through Houzz have all kinds of issues. Enter through this link and go to this discussion and I am sure the proper page will be displayed when you click on the Alphabet link gardenweb

If you already enter through gardenweb I don't know what to say except I am sorry you are having trouble.

@peren.all Zone 5a Ontario Canada, I did what you suggested. I entered gardenweb. I clicked on the link you provided upthread. Here's where it took me. Same as before, recent posts. I'm in Safari on a Mac. Could that have anything to do with it?

liquidfeet..Houzz is horrible..I decided to see what I'd get if I searched for some alphabet posts..used peren's link..after a LOT of navigating I got 3 pages of old posts..I took some screenshots..I can't post links..I've tried..I can't explain everything that happened..somehow while trying to make this comment I'm typing blind..the keyboard covers what I'm typing..it was impossible..so I signed out and back in..3 times..I'm not tech savvy but Houzz gives me more headaches than any other site..2011 was before my time..I didn't know there was a summer alphabet then..I remember the author of the summer alphabet..I believe he's passed away..check the dates on the screenshots..there's some from the winter and some from the summer..just wanted to say I didn't locate the 2019 alphabet..

liquidfeet try clicking on djacobz picture as she suggested.

nw more craziness! When you clicked on my link did the 2019 Alphabet posts not come up? This is ridiculous!

Liquidfeet, did you try going to my ideabooks? Simple—-click on my cat icon to the left. It will take you to all my ideabooks. Scroll down a bit and you will begin to see books for each letter and some categories. Just open one of the letter books and it shows exactly how it’s done. Let me know if you are not able to do this. My ideabooks are public to anyone that wants to read them.

@djacob Z6a SE WI, yes I went to your ideabooks and found one of the alphabet threads. Thank you!

In the search bar at the top, type in: "Hosta A 2019"

Then the shaded choices come up, like: "in Discussions", "in Hostas", etc.... choose "in Hostas".

You should get a result list with a lot of the alphabet threads from last winter.

    This used to be easier!
