I have two Florist Roses in my garden and I REALLY like both.

Hot Princess-----A beautiful Hot pink with great leather like foliage.

Crystalline-----A beautiful pure white bloom with beautiful dark green foliage.

Both make very nice garden roses. I'm glad they enjoy life outside the hot houses in Central America.

I have one florist rose, Caramel Antique, which was sold by Wayside Gardens for one season quite a long time ago. The blooms are gorgeous, on long stems, and last a very long time in the vase. It pauses quite a while between flushes--the blooms are very large and contain lots of petals. Diane

I've never seen a rose like this at the florist's. That looks a bit like an English rose to me.

The only florist roses I am aware of are like this:

Severe, It's not an English rose, but a Kordes, and if you check HMF, you will see it was a florist rose. It's official name is Caramel Antike Freelander. This was some time ago. Diane

@Ken Wilkinson - 'Hot Princess' and 'Crystalline' are both stunning roses! It's good to know that they do well in the garden, not just in the greenhouse.

@Diane Brakefield - Your 'Caramel Antique' is magnificent! I'm in love with that color! It's such a shame that it's not in commerce in the U.S. anymore.

Well, I learned quite a bit from that bouquet. Namely, how NOT TO try to refresh your beginning to-wilt roses by following bad Internet advice.

I saw this video where someone refreshed wilted roses by cutting the stems on a very, very long 45 degrees angle that made them look like long spikes at the bottom. Then placed them in very hot water. She did all that and they came back beautifully in the video.

I did it two and the next day they were still wilted and the stems indicated they had been scalded. They went fast downhill from there.

Haha, those internet hacks have never worked for me either. Some people say use cold water, some say to use hot water, some say you have to refresh the water every few days and re-cut the stems. When I cut roses from my garden I just arrange them in a vase of room temperature water and they last for about a week, or sometimes even longer depending on the variety. I have never gotten a bouquet of roses from the store though, so maybe florist roses require a different technique to keep them fresh.

Do you add any plant food or preservative to the water?

No, I tried once but the roses actually wilted faster. I think it just depends on variety. 'Iceberg' roses only last about a day or two, but 'Medallion' roses last about a week. My grocery store minis last the longest of all. I have some greenish white mini rose bushes that I got from Safeway, they are one of Rocket Farms Victory Roses series, 'Honora' is the variety I think, and they last about a month in the vase. The flowers just last and last, until I forget to re-fill the vase with water and the flowers dry out. I have some pictures of them, I will see if I can find them and post some later today.

Has anyone tried rooting florist roses (from ones that you're allowed to propagate, of course!)? I know they're designed for hothouses....but surely building a hothouse is a small price to pay for beautiful roses nobody else has :)

Damask, I'm late to tell you, but your mini is mega beautiful and blooms so profusely. Has it come through many winters? I grow a huge mini (that sounds weird), but I don't think the blooms are as lovely as your rose. I've never tried mine in a vase, but I don't think it would last long. Diane

@rosecanadian: thanks Carol. It’s still a young plant in my garden but it grows so quickly. I hope next spring it will be fully mature and get more blooms.

I would take even a small amount of those exceptionally beautiful blooms! But, yes, maturity can only help. :)

Hot Princess was in the final 5. This show only had the top three in the HT's. It wasn't quite good enough.

Yeah, it has become one of my favorites, even though it's a non-smeller. The most amazing thing is how long it lasts. Here is the same bloom from September 26 to October 20.

Thank you so much @Diane Brakefield! Those minis are about 10 years old. Winters do not get cold here so winter hardiness is not an issue, but they do not like heat. When it gets really hot here they defoliate, but when the weather cools down they grow new leaves and bloom again. They look their best in the spring months. Minis last surprisingly long in vases. Many outlast regular sized roses, depending on the color. I’ve found that minis that are tinged with green or white tend to last longer in a vase. Haha, “minis” get huge here too, sometimes nearly the size of a small floribunda!

Damask, Thanks for your info on your mini. The store mini I grow is probably about a year or two older than yours. It was a gift from a student to my daughter when she was a kindergarten teacher. This plant is about 5X5 feet and blooms constantly. In spring this year, the blooms were pretty much a regular sized roses' blooms. As the season wore on, the blooms returned to normal mini size. What a weird plant. I don't particularly like the blooms, but we keep it for sentimental reasons, and the plant itself is lovely. Diane

God willing I will enter the tech industry and do gardening as a hobby. I would like to experiment hybridizing plants one of these days. Maybe even make my own rose variety : ).

@Diane Brakefield The weird rose that was gifted to your daughter is called Priyatam,that was bred in India by M.S Viraraghavan.

That's interesting, Jay, but it was definitely a grocery store mini when it was given to my daughter. I live here, and remember the little rose well. It took a a number of years to achieve its size. The blooms shown in the photos were early in the season, and those blooms produced as the season wore on were smaller and definitely mini size. Diane

I don't grow Priyatama(I am looking for it,seems it is not easily available in India) but maybe your climate is significantly different compared to where the breeder has it? Or maybe it is not Priyatama? It has its page on hmf what do you think of those photos?

I checked--Priyatama is lovely, but quite different from my rose. P has a lot of painterly shading and is larger than a mini bloom. Its bloom structure, with a high center, is different, too. I hope you find your, rose. I wish I could help you. Diane
